GENERAL CIGAR SATISFIES ITS SWEET TOOTH Print E-mail

Another popular flavored brand, Tatiana, is distributed by Miami Cigar & Co., also the distributors of La Aurora and Leon Jimenes.

Fired up:
With 60-ring cigars now the norm in many cigar lines and so many smokers relegated to the outdoors, the issue of lighting your cigar is becoming more complicated.

One approach, pioneered by a Canadian company called Nibo, is to offer multiple-flame torches that increase the coverage of a single lighter. Nibo offered two and three-torch models beginning in the late 1990s, but now some of the larger manufacturers have picked up on the concept.

Colibri now offers the Flare, a triple-torch with a thumb-operated switch that opens the top and ignites the three torches and includes a hidden cigar punch. There are four designs available and it retails for $95.00.

Xikar has two different triple-torch lighters, the Ellipse and the Trezo. The Ellipse ($89.00 at retail) also allows one-hand operation and there’s a large fuel tank and a tank window, an important aspect of any triple-torch lighter as they consume fuel at a rapid pace. The Trezo ($99.99) also has one-hand operation but places its three flames in a straight line instead of the typical triangle. The two outer flames are angled toward the center at eight degrees, offering a unique approach to lighting large tobacco surfaces. It also has a fuel window and is available in four finishes.

With blow-torch temperatures and wider coverage, it’s even more imperative than usual for smokers to use caution with these powerful lighters. But on the golf course, is lighting up a 60-ring cigar outdoors, these lighters might just be the best choice.

Presidential candidate Richardson also a cigar lover:
Republican Presidential candidates Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson are well-known cigar hounds, but now a Democrat has piped up in public about his smoking habits.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson told Playboy magazine in an interview published in the December issue that “I’m a regular person. I don’t make any pretense. I like the arts – I like modern art – but I’d rather spend time watching a football game or a baseball game. I go to the opera and leave at intermission. I like to smoke a cigar.”

Despite his professed penchant for cigars, Richardson signed a statewide smoking ban into law in March of this year that went into effect in June. The law included bars and restaurants, but exempted retail tobacco stores, cigar bars, casinos, private clubs, and one-person offices not generally open to the public.

Richardson badly trails Democratic front-runners Sen. Hillary Clinton (New York), Barack Obama (Illinois) and John Edwards (North Carolina) in most polls.

Did you know?

Although the preferred humidity setting for cigars is 70%, temperature control of 70-75 F is equally important.
