NEW, 2008 POCKET CYCLOPEDIA OF CIGARS IS HERE!Plus: President Bush vetoes SCHIP again

Los Angeles, December 14 – As is our custom each year at this time, we welcome a new edition of the Perelman’s Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars.

This is our 14th annual edition, stretching back to 1995, tracking cigars marketed nationally in the United States. That first edition was a relative shrimp, listing “just” 370 brands. Our new 2008 edition has the second-most brands ever, with 1,305 in total, covering handmade, machine-made and small cigars. Only the 1999 edition, published at the height of the Cigar Boom had more, with 1,448. Some highlights:

  • The new edition spans 640 pages and includes coverage of 1,145 handmade brands, a net increase of 71 from last year. It’s the third straight year that the number of brands has increased after a steady decline from 2000-04.

  • There are 214 brands that are new altogether or re-entered national distribution in this new edition, including such interesting-sounding cigars as Adonis, Bandidos, Bluntville, Defiance and Mistakes. There were 155 brands (144 handmade) which left the scene or were reduced to regional distribution.

  • Most brands are profiled with full details of manufacturing origin, where the constituent tobaccos are from, a complete list of sizes and notes on brand history, strength and packaging. (The dominance of the Dominican Republic in cigar production for the U.S. market becomes clear as you page through the book with almost 45% of the total in the handmade sector and an increasing number of the machine-made brands.)

  • Extended coverage in the brand profiles was given to limited-edition programs for brands such as Avo, Camacho, Davidoff, The Griffin’s, La Escepcion to help smokers and collectors identify them.

  • The unique cover was provided courtesy of Mike’s Cigars and shows a Miami tobacco dealer standing at the entrance to his shop, next to his “cigar store Indian.” The artwork is called “Indian” and was originally produced as a cover for one of Mike’s mail-order catalogs by Jose Chiu.

All of these elements and its handy four-by-six-inch size have helped to make the Perelman’s Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars the standard reference to cigars marketed nationally in the United States. It’s behind the counter in hundreds of tobacco shops across the country and you can own your own copy as well!

It retails for $12.95 and you can order your own copies by clicking on the “Online Store” tab above. You can also order a new 2008 edition with a copy of our third edition of our Perelman’s Pocket Cyclopedia of Havana Cigars, published in 2005.

Our thanks to the many people who worked with us to make the new edition of the Cyclopedia a reference that has the depth and breadth to be a useful tool for the smoker, tobacconist and the rest of the trade. Order yours today!

    Bush vetoes SCHIP again:

Although the preferred humidity setting for cigars is 70%, temperature control of 70-75 F is equally important.
