Page 2 of 2 The Puros Indios line includes the legendary “Chief,” at 18 inches long (and 66 ring gauge) the largest production cigar currently made for the U.S. market. At present, the factory is reported to make about 75,000 cigars per day of its various brands.
A new “Reyes Family Cigars” logo has been introduced and a new Web site has debuted which tells the story of the Reyes brands and of the 83-year-old Reyes himself.
New brands for the new year: Lew Rothman, the founder and head of J-R Cigars, isn’t shy about bringing out new cigar brands.
Normally, you’d like to bring new brands out in time to be promoted for the holiday season, but his new blends didn’t make it in time for his holiday season catalog. No matter, most of them are coming on line right after the new year: Bolivar Suntuoso En Tubo, a series of glass-tubed cigars made in four sizes at the Villazon factory in Honduras in a total production run of 100,000, offered in boxes of 10.
Camacho San Luis y Martinez, made by the Camacho folks in Honduras, saluting one of the most famous growing areas of the Vuelta Abajo in Cuba. This is a full-bodied blend, also in glass tubes that’s offered in four sizes in boxes of 10.
H. Upmann Millonario, again from Honduras, also in glass tubes and in boxes of 10. These cigars use a 1999-grown Connecticut wrapper and are offered in just two sizes.
Montecristo Flor Fina, made in Honduras in five sizes and designed to be heavier in body and flavor than the Dominican lines now produced. Full-bodied, this line features an Ecuadorian-grown, Sumatra-seed wrapper and is offered in boxes of 10.
Perdomo En Vidrio, made in Nicaragua and also full-bodied, but with an Ecuadorian-grown, Connecticut-seed wrapper. Offered in boxes of 10, there are three larger sizes in this line.
Luxury Sevens, a unique three-cigar line from Altadis U.S.A.’s giant Tabacalera de Garcia factory in the Dominican Republic. According to the description, the binder and filler for all three are the same and all three are the same size: seven inches and 50 ring. However, the “H. Upmann” version has a Connecticut Shade wrapper, the “Montecristo” has an Ecuadorian-grown, Sumatra-seed wrapper and the “Romeo y Julieta” has an Ecuadorian-grown, Connecticut-seed wrapper. If you’re not already confused, note that all three styles of the Sevens line come in boxes of 12!
Rothman isn’t done and descriptions aren’t yet available for the H. Upmann Bankers and the Da Vinci Masterpiece lines. But this promises to be quite a year for J-R: already majority-owned by a subsidiary of Altadis, S.A., the company will become part of Imperial Tobacco when the sale of Altadis to the British cigarette giant closes in January and Altadis/Imperial can purchase the remainder of the shares in J-R at the end of 2008. ~ Rich Perelman
