Los Angeles, December 27 – Robert Guertin, the owner of Big Sticks Fine Cigars in Mesa, Arizona, was livid when a thief stole two expensive Seiko watches in the space of three days in early November.
So he posted the surveillance video of the thefts on YouTube and offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the thief’s arrest.
On Wednesday, Mesa police say they arrested the thief, Michael Adams, 35, who later confessed to both thefts.
The YouTube video was a clever idea, but it didn’t lead the police to Adams. Instead, they traced one of the stolen watches to a west Mesa pawn shop and were able to identify Adams as the culprit. Adams was arrested in Mesa and officers said he admitted to the two thefts.
He was booked on two counts of shoplifting and one count of trafficking in stolen property.
Newest Casa del Habano opens in India: There are now more than 100 Casas del Habano, the Habanos, S.A.-licensed store for all things Habanos and the newest has opened in a country which is starting to heat up in terms of cigar consumption: India.
The location of the store is interesting. Instead of the national capital, New Delhi, the new Casa opened in Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay). With a metropolitan population of 19 million, there should be enough smokers around to keep the Casa staff busy.
The Great Indian Cigar Company, which is the franchise holder for the project, plans to open five more Casas in other Indian cities over the next three years.
Keeping their spirits up: With the impending sale of Altadis, S.A. to Imperial Tobacco and smoking ban after smoking ban being initiated in Altadis’s main European markets, it’s understandable that some of the company’s staff managers are a little uneasy.
The International Herald-Tribune reported that Altadis is doing something about it, quietly.
The company has set up an internal Web site called “Le Lab” which is a morale booster and social networking site for, according to the story, “several hundred Altadis brand managers who could use a little inspiration as cafes and restaurants around the world continue to shove users of its wares out the door.”
The core of the site is a series of videos “extolling the pleasures of smoking” produced by American video producer Vincent Gagliostro. “I want the films to clarify and educate,” he told the Herald-Tribune. “In some ways it’s like re-introducing smoking and what I came up with is responsible smoking. Responsible smoking is about co-existing, really. It’s a dialogue between smokers and nonsmokers. Yes, there’s a smoking ban coming [in France on Jan. 1], but these people are not evil or the devil.”
