Which Churchill authorized the Winston Churchill line? The new Winston Churchill cigar brand, created and made in four sizes in the Davidoff factory in the Dominican Republic, was actually authorized by a descendant of the famed British Prime Minister of the World War II era.
It turns out that Winston S. Churchill, grandson of Sir Winston Spencer Leonard Churchill (1874-1965, pictured above), was the one behind the new blend. He is quoted in a small brochure enclosed in each box of the new line thus:
“At the age of 21 Winston Churchill, visiting the Caribbean to observe the Cuban Revolutionary War against Spain, took the decision to give up the cigarette in favour of the cigar. For my grandfather his beloved cigars became a passion.
“Although of an uncompromising nature, addressing himself to each task in his very own way, he knew how to enjoy life. A close friend once remarked:
“‘Mr. Churchill is easily satisfied with the best.’
“Inspired by his philosophy of life, I hit on the idea of creating an exceptional cigar – one worthy of bearing the name of perhaps the most famous cigar-smoker of all time.”
The four shape names are all related to Churchill’s life: Blenheim (7 inches by 48 ring), named for the place of Churchill’s birth, Blenheim Palace;
Chequers (5 1/2 x 46), named for the official country residence of the British Prime Minister;
No. 10 (5 1/4 x 52), for No. 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister for about 275 years and
Marrakesh (6 x 50), a favorite spot of Churchill’s and one which was often reflected in his paintings.
The Winston Churchill line had been slated exclusively for the Davidoff shops across North America, but a small number of other stores have received shipments. The official launch of the brand will come in February. ~ Rich Perelman
