  • A nice story on Canadian whisky, certainly not as high-profile as those from the U.S., Scotland or Ireland, but interesting to the connoisseur for sure.

Did you know there are Canadian-made single malts? Get to know Glen Breton, made in Nova Scotia and a new entry, Winchester, from British Columbia.

Writer Keith Rockmael ends with the best lines of the entire story:

“The Canadian whiskies, like the Canadians themselves, seem to suffer from a sort of inferiority complex. As [whisky maker Ken] Winchester says, ‘We don’t think we’re successful until someone in America tells us so.’ Canadians are modest in nature and that goes for their whisky as well. There’s no hype or flashy marketing campaigns, just good bottles of whisky.”

There’s a lot more, including a profile of “Baywatch” alumna Brooke Burns, who enjoys an occasional cigar but says that robustos are too fat for her taste; terrific stories on how Heather Phillips created the Heavenly Cigar Company out of a failed bar in Naples, Florida and on the Ybor City cigar maker Rodriguez & Menendez, a business which will be in peril if the oppressive SCHIP bill passes and raises the tax cap on cigars to up to $1 per cigar, and a marvelous profile y Stephen Cox of the spectacular rise and hard fall of the epic – and under-appreciated – comedy team of Abbott & Costello.

And that doesn’t count Burt Sugar’s hilarious end-of-the-year wrap-up of the best quotes in sports from 2007, including ESPN’s Brian Kenny, who said “After you’ve heard two eyewitness accounts of an auto accident, it makes you begin to worry about history” or this gem from Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder about the team’s opening game played at Wembley Stadium in London, England: “They speak English over there . . . I just learned that yesterday.”
