NEW RETAILER TOPS HAVANA RANKINGS Print E-mail

Click here to access the entire ranking list, offered in a Portable Document Format (.pdf) file. (If you do not have a reader for this file, you can download the Adobe Acrobat Reader for free from Adobe.com.)

This list comes with several warnings, of course, so please be aware:

  • Unlike U.S. retailers with whom we have some familiarity, we have no contacts with these retailers in our International Rankings. This ranking is provided as a service to our international readers (our statistics program says we are served up to computers in 67 different countries!) and inclusion does not – in any way – indicate our approval of the business practices of these site operators. Buyer beware!

  • We repeat, as always, that Americans are not allowed, by U.S. law, to buy Havana cigars online and have them sent to the U.S. Doing so could bring an inquiry and possibly sanctions from the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Treasury.

  • We have been asked in the past to take into account shipping costs when calculating these rankings. Our question is, shipping to where? Shipping costs, duties and taxes vary so widely by country and carrier that to even attempt some kind of estimate would be futile. We calculated the prices; the rest is up to our international readership.

We review international prices twice per year. Our national retailer rankings for the U.S. market will be compiled once again in May or June.

Long battle over the Gran Havana Lounge in San Diego ends:
“I know people may think I may walk away a winner. But believe me, there is no winner.”

That’s Ahmad Mesdaq, who invested nearly $2 million to make his Gran Havana Cigar & Coffee Lounge a success at the corner of 5th and J Streets in San Diego’s Gaslamp District, only to have his shop closed in 2004 by the city’s development agency under its powers of eminent domain. His 5,000 sq. ft. property was condemned to make way for a hotel being built by a private developer, which is finally supposed to break ground in July.

Over the course of the last three years, he sued and won, then saw elements of the verdict overturned at the appellate level. At last, however, the end is in sight.

The original jury trial ended with an award to Mesdaq of $7.8 million in damages and $1.2 million for legal fees. After lengthy negotiations, the Centre City Development Corporation finally agreed to pay Mesdaq $7.8 million in total and he will have to pay his legal fees of between $1-2 million.

Mesdaq told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he’d like to open a new shop in the vibrant Gaslamp District, but he’s going to take it slow for now. “Any business shut down for three years is hard to restart,” he told reporter Jeanette Steele. “I’m taking one step at a time. I don’t know what direction the economy is going.”
