Page 2 of 2 But a series of court decisions eventually allowed Consolidated Cigar Corporation – now Altadis U.S.A. – to acquire the Montecristo brand and sell it in the U.S. In fact, Montecristo cigars were made, partly for experimentation and partly to protect the trademark. And if you knew the right retailer, you might even be able to buy some . . . now and again. But they weren’t widely available until Consolidated came out with the brand in full-scale national distribution in 1995. But a little piece of history is now available. J-R Cigars has started a “Luxury Cigar” division in which Lew Rothman has been buying up ancient cigars from the corners of warehouses of every major cigar maker that will take his check (or wire transfer). One of the treasures he’s acquired – and is now selling at remarkably reasonable prices – is some of the experimental Montecristos from 1987 through 1994. These were lighter cigars than the current blend – but still with a Connecticut wrapper – and were issued in different sizes as they were not for serious sale. The 1987 edition is the No. 1, a 6 5/8-inch by 44-ring Lonsdale. The cigars from other years include Lonsdales (1988 and 1992), some Churchills (1989 and 1993), a Corona (1989) and a Torpedo (1991). The 1994 cigars, in the blend used today, are Robustos and all are offered in boxes of 10 at $9-10 per cigar. Also available among the J-R “Luxury” selections are some “original” H. Upmanns made for the U.S. market. When the trademark cases that allowed the old Cuban brand names to be used in the U.S., Consolidated Cigar offered the H. Upmann line in a blend that featured Cameroon wrappers. After the collapse of the Cameroon leaf market in the early 1990s, H. Upmanns were wrapped with Indonesian leaf and are to this day. But with the popularity of the H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon Series, you might be interested in these antiques from 1987 (Lonsdales), 1988 (Lonsdales), 1990 (Coronas) and 1993 (Churchills). They’re also in boxes of 10, at $6-8 each.
