The company announcement did not name the locations, but did say that one additional Casa Havana store would be added per month beginning in March, with locations identified in Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, New York and Orlando.

The announcement also stated that the company “owns and operates Tabacaleras Cubanas USA of Ybor City, Florida” and will sell those cigars in its Café Havana locations.

The concept is a good one, as smokers of all kinds of have been pushed out of bars and other public facilities. And there are successfully-operating cigar bars in several cities, although no national chain approach has been tried before. Happily, most (but not all) smoking bans have exceptions for cigar bars, since no one can reasonably say that they went to a cigar bar not expecting to be in a non-smoking environment.

Cigar-friendly hotel chain determined to accommodate cigars in Scotland:
The Hotel du Vin chain is devoted to providing its guests with the finest in accommodations, food, drink and cigars. Their $20 million conversion of the College of Physicians Laboratory into a new hotel in Edinburgh, Scotland has run into problems with the Scottish anti-smoking law, one of the toughest in the world.

The Hotel du Vin answer to other smoking bans has been the creation of smoking “shacks” which are open on all four sides – and therefore meet all smoking regulations – have are heated in such a way that the user enters through a “heat curtain” into a controlled interior with leather chairs, plasma televisions and fine wines and Havana cigars. But this won’t work in Edinburgh.

The problem is that the courtyard in the middle of the old college is so small that a smoking room would block the view of the courtyard from the rooms on the upper floors. Additionally, no plans for the smoking shelters were included in the approved plans, so these will have to be added and approved.

But Hotel du Vin executives are not deterred. “We could probably still install one of our original shacks in the courtyard and remain within the smoking regulations,” said the hotel group’s director of interior design, Stephanie Briggs, in comments to the Scotsman.com Web site. “But we decided it would be better to do something bespoke specifically for the Edinburgh hotel.”

That’s good and will be a welcome location for smokers in Scotland, whose ability to enjoy cigars outside the home has been severely compromised by the new law. And even the anti-smoking lobby is being reasonable on the subject. A spokesman for the Action on Smoking Health group told Scotsman.com: “As long as any proposed shelter stays within smoking regulations and does not present a passive-smoking danger to staff or customers, we would not have any objection to a cigar smoking shelter being built within the courtyard.”

Good. And after the new Hotel du Vin – and its smoking shelter opens – we can start the argument that cigars present no passive-smoking danger at all.

Although the preferred humidity setting for cigars is 70%, temperature control of 70-75 F is equally important.
