THE CIGAR OF THE YEAR IS . . . Print E-mail

Of more interest was another hard-to-find, oddball cigar “box” from Cuba known as a “Branch of the Tree” cabinet that was offered on eBay. Made of lacquered bark, these cylinder-shaped cases held 25 corona-sized cigars (5 1/2 x 42) and were offered by various manufacturers both before and after the 1959 Revolution, up to about 1980.

The specific one available last week was for H. Upmann, one of the first times in recent memory that a cabinet of this type had been seen for this brand. In good condition, it was clearly a post-Revolution model as the bottom read “Hecho en Cuba” instead of the pre-Revolution “Made in Havana-Cuba.” Offered by a Canadian seller, the item drew some lively bidding, ending with nine bids and a final price of $510.00, a bit better than the $479.57 bid for a Sancho Panza model last month.

Super Bowl cigar parties:
General Cigar was in good form at Super Bowl XLII in Arizona, which was no surprise since it has a Club Macanudo branch at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, home of the Washington Redskins.

At the Super Bowl, a “Club Macanudo Lounge” was set up at a private estate by celebrity management firm Octagon International, offering a selection of Macanudo and Cohiba sizes for the enjoyment of the guests. Hall of Famers John Elway and Ronnie Lott were seen enjoying the lounge, along with current stars including cornerback Marcus Trufant of Seattle and running back Marshawn Lynch of the Buffalo Bills.

General Cigar also supported the Franco Harris Immaculate Reception and Fundraiser for the sixth straight year, which raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network and Cure International. The event was held this year at the elegant Hilton Tapatio and Harris – a fan of Punch – and former Colts great (and Harris’s Penn State teammate) Lydell Mitchell hosted the event. There, the selection was expanded to include Cohiba, Macanudo, La Gloria Cubana and Punch, of course.

And there was a Macanudo sighting at the private party for the Redskins’ delegation, which included a cigar and spirits tasting that brought a little bit of FedEx Field to the Arizona desert.

And the winner is:
