A TEN-YEAR CELEBRATION FROM CAMACHO Print E-mail

The latest attack on smokers was summed up by the newspaper as “Under the bill, the Kansas tax on cigarettes would climb in July from 50 cents per pack to $1.29 cents. The tax on each pack of cigarettes would escalate by 4 cents annually until 2013.

“In terms of cigars and smokeless tobacco products, the bill adjusts the state tax from the current rate of 10 percent of the wholesale price to 57 percent.”

Whitney Damron, representing Swisher International, one of the largest cigar marketers in the country told the Taxation Committee of the Kansas House, “We respectfully find the imposition of a 470 percent increase in the existing tax on other tobacco products to be an outrageous recommendation.”

The bill came from the usual suspects, led by the Kansas Health Policy Authority. However, the newspaper report also indicated that the likelihood of passage is, at present, small in an election year. “Chairman Kenny Wilk, R-Lansing, said he scheduled hearings as a courtesy to the health policy authority and doubted there was sufficient support to get the bill out of committee,” said the story.

New, more powerful Graycliff:
The Graycliff Espresso line is instantly identifiable by its jet-black wrapper grown in Costa Rica Introduced in 2004, it’s one of the richest tasting blends in the Graycliff line, and while it is considered full in body, it’s certainly not overpowering. The blue-label Profesionale line is much stronger.

But the rich sweetness of this blend offered an opportunity for a more powerful cigar, the Double Espresso.

It’s offered in only one shape, a 4 1/2-inch by 54-ring, which has double the ligero leaf inside to increase its presence in the mouth. It’s a project of Keith Meier at Cigars International and the Garzarolis at Graycliff and available for the time being only from Cigars International.

It’s offered in boxes of 18 and like most Graycliffs, it’s not inexpensive at a little more than $11 apiece. But if you are looking for more pop from an already-rich, maduro blend, this could be a contender.

Imperial Tobacco takeover of Altadis now underway:
The merger of Altadis, S.A. into Imperial Tobacco took a major step forward with the resignation of nine directors of the existing company and their replacement by eight directors nominated by Imperial.

The eight new directors will join seven holdover directors on the 15-member Altadis board. Robert Dyrbus will become the new Chief Executive of the company, with Jean-Dominique Comolli, who came into Altadis as the chief executive of SEITA, the French half of the company.
