This issue's ratings section focused on an increasingly popular sector of the market: tubed cigars. A total of 18 were tried, all falling into the mild, mild-to-medium or medium-bodied categories.

In the mild-bodied category, which had the most entries – 11 – of any group, the Cohiba Toro (6 inches by 50 ring) scored an average of 87 points to win first-place honors. Its consistency was a virtue, but it was also scored the best of the mild-bodied group in taste (87 points) and construction (87). The Montecristo Tubo (6 x 42) was tops in appearance (89) and ended up in a tie for third in this category with the Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Banquet (6 3/4 x 48) at 86.3. The Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real Verona’s Court (5 1/2 x 44) ended up second at 86.8.

In the mild-to-medium group, five cigars were rated, with the new H. Upmann Preciosa (6 x 52) from Honduras earning an overall score of 87.5. It won for taste in a tie with the H. Upmann Tubos Gold (5 x 44) from the Dominican Republic (87 points each) and had the top score in appearance (89). The Tubos Gold had the best score for construction (88) and finished second in the group at 87.3 with the Romeo y Julieta 1875 Churchill (7 x 50) third.

The poll of reader-reviewers found only two of the cigars offered reached even medium in body, although manufacturers of the Partagas Black Label and other brands would say their blends are quite heavy. But the Partagas Black Maximo (6 x 50) had the highest score in the entire tasting at 90 points and had strong scores in appearance (88) and construction (86) for an overall score of 87.5, equal-best of all cigars tested. The new Nat Sherman 489 Tubo No. 2 (6 x 52) scored well on construction (88) and finished second at 87.0.
