POPULAR PERDOMO HABANO LIGHTENS UP Print E-mail

A survey by healthcare provider Benenden Healhcare was reported to find that about 14 percent of British smokers quit after the English ban was instituted last July. The report says that’s about 1.6 million people, which can be considered impressive, except when one considers that about 11.4 million people – or 86% – are still smoking, despite the smoking ban.

Of course, figures on this sort of thing are all over the place. Just last month, the British government announced that 165,000 smokers had quit using the national health service’s anti-smoking service, but that more than nine million Brits still smoke and that the national smoking rate among adults was still at 22 percent.

What about Cuba?
The announcement that 81-year-old Fidel Castro will not seek a return to office when the Cuban legislature meets this coming weekend was greeted with a shrug by U.S. foreign policy officials. Asked if the change in leadership – Castro’s brother Raul (pictured) will undoubtedly be confirmed as the head of the government – would have any effect on the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba, Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte told the Associated Press, “I can’t imagine that happening any time soon.”

A State Department spokesman added later, “The changing of the guard is not significant of and by itself.”

Deputy State Department spokesman Tom Casey said “It will be significant if in fact it leads to greater openness and freedom for the Cuban people and ultimately to a democratic transition.” But he also noted that “the general analysis is that Raul Castro is 'Fidel lite.' He is simply a continuation of the Castro regime, of the dictatorship.”

In the meantime, the small Herzfeld Caribbean Basin Fund rose by 17 percent in exchange trading to $8.70 with a record 1.44 million shares traded, according to a Bloomberg News report. The fund was founded in 1994 and is designed to grow by investing in companies which are positioned to prosper from new business opportunities in Cuba once the American trade embargo ends.

Hammer time:
There’s no doubt about the passion for Arturo Fuente cigars in today’s U.S. cigar market. That was demonstrated again with last week’s auction of 25 individual Arturo Fuente Hemingway Signature cigars (6 inches by 47 ring) by Famous Smoke Shop's CigarAuctioneer.com.

The suggested retail price of this cigar is $6.50, but the lowest winning bid paid a 23 percent premium, or $8.00 for one of these cigars. The highest bid was $30.00 (!) for one cigar, but the average price was $10.65. The biggest spender in the auction bought ten cigars for $10.00 each for a total price of $100.00. The 25 cigars together brought a total of $266.27, nearly a 64 percent premium on the retail price of $162.50 for a box of 25 . . . if you can find one.

Did you know?

Although the preferred humidity setting for cigars is 70%, temperature control of 70-75 F is equally important.
