FESTIVAL DEL HABANO STARTS IN HAVANA Print E-mail

Kraig Marton, the attorney for Magnum, said that the state is “trying to read things into the statute that just aren't there.” The head of the Health Services department’s epidemiology and disease control division, Don Herrington, according to the story, “acknowledged the law's wording doesn't specifically ban smoking at tobacco shops selling alcohol, but he said the agency will prevail because it will be difficult to convince a judge that tobacco shops serving food or alcohol shouldn't be considered restaurants or bars.”

So a convenience store is a restaurant or a bar, Mr. Herrington?

Jones said, however, that if the Magnum suit ultimately fails, he would have to follow the requirements of the Health Services Department, or face substantial fines that could severely impact his business. Under the statute, fines could range from $100 to $500 per violation.

Camacho announces in-store date for new line:
The heavily-promoted Camacho Corojo 10th Anniversary line is expected to be in stores by March 28 according to Camacho Cigars.

Like its sibling, the Camacho Corojo, the 10th Anniversary line is made from all Corojo tobacco grown in Honduras. This blend is considered medium-to-full in body with a rich and creamy flavor and will be offered in boxes of 21 in four sizes: 4 1/2 inches by 50 ring; 6 inches by 54-ring (torpedo); 11/18 (6 inch by 54-ring perfecto) and 6 inches by 60 ring.

All of the cigars are double-banded with the words “Edicion Limitada” on the footer band. About 300,000 cigars will be made in total.

Hammer time:
Cigar memorabilia collectors have been busy on eBay, notably two old cigar jars.

  • A pre-embargo H. Upmann glass jar for 25 Arcadias (probably 40-ring coronas) in good condition drew quite a bit of interest and finally sold – without cigars, of course – for $317.00 after 12 bids.

  • The eternally popular Partagas Sevilla Humijar, a ceramic jar decorated with brown markings and available up until about 1979, also did well, drawing 14 bids for a seller in Britain. It finally sold for an impressive $481.87.

  • A pre-embargo wood barrel that once held 25 Jose L. Piedra Habaneros – almost certainly 5 1/2-inch by 42-ring coronas – drew 17 bids and a final price of $422.00, quite remarkable for a minor brand.

Substantial interest in such jars is generally confined to those made in Cuba. A good-looking specimen of a jar of 50 Don Diego Amatistas – without cigars – made in the Canary Islands in the 1960s drew only one bid and sold for $24.99.

It is time the leaders of the cigar business unite to fight against the insane no smoking laws being imposed upon cigar smokers WORLD WIDE. I was so tired of it I put together the website www.australiacigarassociation.com to do a survey (please go and fill out the survery) for our cigar bars, cigar divans, cigar lunges and cigar stores to show the government authorities who smokes cigars. I am tired of no one stepping up and taking on the anti-smoking lobby. Where are the leaders of the new RTDA? The owners of big cigar companies (British Tobacco would not do anything to help me get the word out about my site even though it would help their sales!) IT IS TIME FOR CIGAR SMOKERS TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED WORLDWIDE!!! If you want to join me in fighting this non-smoking attack - write me at my email address.
