NO ILLUSION: THESE CIGARS ARE GOOD! Print E-mail

Roxor Deluxe – Cameroon wrapper:
[Nicaragua: available in 4 sizes]
The Roxor motto is “Non Plus Ultra” meaning “nothing further beyond,” implying that the Roxor blend is as good as it gets. That might be an overstatement, but these are very good cigars indeed.

The Cameroon-wrapped line has a spicy aroma and a medium-to-full-bodied taste. The flavor is marvelous, with elegant smoothness and a slight sweet, creamy taste and a fairly long finish. It’s rich and mellow with a light texture that’s uninterrupted by any hint of spice or pepper.

Well constructed, it burns easily and stays rich and interesting to the end. A modest spicy note enters the conversation in the second half, but remains an accent rather than a distraction.

In addition to its world-class firmness and flavor, it’s also an accessible cigar, retailing for $5.20 to $6.40 each before local tobacco taxes are added on. At just $5.80 retail, the 7-inch by 54-ring Churchill can only be considered a bargain. All four sizes are offered in snazzy black clamshell-style boxes of 25.

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

Roxor Deluxe – Connecticut wrapper:
[Nicaragua: available in 4 sizes]
The interior blend of Nicaraguan-grown binder and filler leaves is maintained in the Connecticut-wrapped version, which has a surprising full-bodied flavor that fills the mouth quickly and pleasantly.

There’s a fun, spicy aroma to this blend that’s not unexpected from Connecticut Shade leaf, and a lively caramelized flavor that also features a tingle of spice on the back of the throat on the finish. It’s nicely balanced and very well made, with an easy draw and even burn.

It’s smooth and easy to smoke and although the flavor lessens in intensity in the second half, it remains enjoy able through to the end. A very nice cigar in every way.

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

Roxor Deluxe – Maduro wrapper:
[Nicaragua: available in 4 sizes]
The third style in the Roxor line uses a Nicaraguan-grown, brown-black maduro wrapper. Its impact is obvious from the first puff when you experience the sweetness of this cigar.

The blend offers a spicy aroma and has an element of spice that you will feel on the tongue during the medium finish. There’s a core flavor of dark caramel that’s rich and sweet, accented by the spiciness that adds depth to the cigar.

It’s fairly consistent throughout, with a little more spice coming on at the end. This is a cigar which can be smoked too hard or too quickly, which can ruin its balance; give this blend some time. Although not as masterful as the Cameroon or Connecticut blends, those who crave the sweetness of maduro-wrapped blends will not be disappointed.

Overall grade: A-: Excellent.

It would be easy to dismiss small brands like Illusione and Roxor because of their lack of wide availability. But these exceptional cigars are what make this a truly “Golden Age” for American smokers who, although without legal access to the famous cigars of Cuba, have the opportunity to enjoy new blends from devoted and talented cigar makers who bring quality in flavor and construction along with accessibility in price. You can add Illusione and Roxor to your must-try lists with confidence.
