THE WORLD'S LARGEST CIGAR FACTORY Print E-mail
The “cigar room” is awesome (shown on the home page). Seijas noted that some five million cigars are in the room at any one time. The facility is kept at a comfortable temperature, but it is not a “cold room” as in some other facilities. Rather, the goal is to keep the cigars at about 70% relative humidity so that the moisture level of all the leaves is harmonized.

Seijas noted that once the cigars are finished as to moisture content, they are ready for sorting by wrapper color and then for banding, packing and shipping. So the aging is really in the treatment of the tobacco, which gets a lot of attention from the time it comes from the field, is fermented in warehouses and finally brought back to life in the factory.

The top brands in terms of production at the Tabacalera de Garcia are Romeo y Julieta, Vega Fina (a favorite in Spain) and Montecristo. Seijas is excited about the future and is looking forward to exploring new blends and new avenues for the high-quality tobaccos that are available to him.

“Next might be a Dominican puro,” he said with a smile. “We have been playing with it for a while. It’s not that far off, perhaps one or two years.”

When he’s ready, so will the energetic team he has assembled.

Did you know?

Although the preferred humidity setting for cigars is 70%, temperature control of 70-75 F is equally important.
