It was started by Jose Gener in Cuba way back about 1865 and when Gener died in 1900, his factory in Havana was reported the largest in the world, producing some 50 million cigars a year. That’s more than even the gargantuan Tabacalera de Garcia in La Romana, Dominican Republic, currently the world’s biggest handmade cigar operation. After the U.S. trade embargo was fully imposed on Cuban goods in 1962, Hoyo left the market, of course, but was one of the first Cuban heritage brands to return. A U.S. court decision allowed the sale of the F. Palicio y Cia. trademarks to Villazon & Co. and Hoyo de Monterrey and Punch soon returned to the market in 1969, but in a Honduran-made edition. Those brands are part of General Cigar now and last year, a surprising new blend was added to the Hoyo line: Hoyo de Tradicion. Compared to the standard Hoyo line, it’s less stout and features a specially-developed Honduran Viso Rosado wrapper and Nicaraguan filler leaves from the volcanic island of Ometepe. It also sports a revised version of the famed giant, red-and-white band that adorns the larger Cuban sizes.
