A NEW "TREASURE" FROM AVO Print E-mail
All of the existing Kahlua inventory will be able to be sold. And General is hardly out of the flavored premium cigar business. When the Drew Estates deal to make Kahlua was made, General did not make flavored cigar in its General Cigar Dominicana factory. It does now, with two styles of the Helix Remix line: the Amaretto-flavored blend introduced in 2005 and the new Café Mocha style, introduced last year.

And the folks at Drew Estate aren’t done by a long shot. “Although we were proud to be the manufacturer of this internationally renowned brand,” noted Drew Estate president Steve Saka, “we were also well prepared for this eventuality. We here at Drew Estate are very excited to now be able to dedicate production capacity to new, coffee-infused products that will not only fill, but overflow any void left by Kahlua’s departure.”

Bill for FDA control of tobacco advances:
The Democrat-controlled Health Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 18-9 on Tuesday to pass a bill to give the U.S. Food & Drug Administration regulatory control over tobacco products.

It’s the first step in a long road for the FDA tobacco-control bill, which will be funded primarily with an add-on to the cigarette tax, but will also add taxes to cigars, pipe tobacco and other tobacco products. The head of the FDA, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach, has said he does not favor the legislation, noting the agency has its hands full as it is, and is leery of managing a product which it does not consider completely safe under any circumstances.

Reports from Capitol Hill indicated that a similar bill, sponsored by Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy (D) awaits a vote in the Senate. However, there is no current timeline for the bill to be heard on the Senate floor or before the full House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Given the fight over the SCHIP legislation that led to a mostly party-line vote in the House of Representatives and two vetoes by President George W. Bush, it is entirely possible that the same scenario could play out over this legislation, leaving the issue up to the next Congress and the next President.

And the winner is:
