Oliveros Eight-Zero:
[Honduras: available in 5 sizes]
For the brand’s 80th anniversary in 2007, Rafael Nodal and Hank Bischoff took a little road trip to Honduras and produced an interesting and engaging cigar.

The Oliveros Eight-Zero has one of the biggest bands in cigardom (pictured), a medium-to-full body and starts off with a lightly spiced aroma and a tangy, sweet flavor with a fairly long finish.

This is a firm, well-made cigar and while the flavor stays fairly consistent throughout, there is an undertone of pepper on the finish in the second half. Instead of being a discomfort, however, it adds depth to the blend and a note of sophistication. This is an adult cigar and not simply a candy cane and it does credit to the long history of the brand.

The five sizes are a little more expensive than most of the other Oliveros lines, but not dramatically so, ranging from $8.00 to $10.00 before local sales and tobacco taxes. For those looking for a treat on the road, consider taking along a few of the tubed Toros (6 x 50)!

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

Oliveros LTD:
[Dominican Republic: available in 2 sizes]
The LTD isn’t new, having been introduced in 2006. But it’s one of the most interesting blends in the brand since it’s designed as a powerful, no-holds-barred cigar that was produced in a single lot of only 100,000 cigars.

It’s powerful, with a full-bodied taste and a toasty aroma, but it’s not a throat burner. Instead, the stout taste features a semi-sweet taste with a spicy finish that you’ll feel on the tongue long after each puff.

What’s most impressive, however, about the LTD is its balance, which is maintained throughout. The sweetness is toned down in the second half and an undertone of pepper emerges, along with a more peppery scent. There some hidden power, too, and you’ll feel it after you put the cigar down for the last time.

There are only two sizes, a Gran Robusto (5 1/2 x 52) and Belicoso Fino (5 1/2 x 50), which range in price from $10.00 to $10.80. Get ‘em before they’re gone!

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

Oliveros XL – Double Corojo:
[Dominican Republic: available in 6 sizes]
Oliveros’s XL for Men line began an overnight favorite of the heavy-taste set when it debuted in 2004. The Double Corojo line – with a bronze-colored wrapper – debuted a year later and is now offered in a spectacular, fat perfecto called the XL F56 DC.

The ones we tried showcased a full-bodied taste and a toasty aroma with a hint of spice. It’s never overpowering, but has a controlled, rich, caramelized taste to start that settles into a smooth groove with a pinch of spice accenting the medium finish.

Well made, these giant perfectos burn evenly with a peppery note in the second half that marks this blend as an adult pleasure. It’s nicely priced at $5.55 to $6.90 each and the giant perfectos are a bargain at $6.90 each.

Overall grade: A-: Excellent.

There’s a lot to like in the new Oliveros blends . . . and the old ones weren’t shabby either. This is a brand to watch in the future, especially if new, well-priced, well-made and tasty cigars like the Eight-Zero are on the way.
