YO-HO, YO-HO, A PIRATE'S CIGAR FOR ME! Print E-mail

There’s a spicy aroma to this cigar, which showcases a medium-bodied presence and has a spicy finish to accompany a seductive, sweet flavor. The burn is nice and even and the second half of the cigar is accented by a light peppery note on the finish.

The Blackbeard has a unique personality, but its highlights are not as bright as the Calico Jack Black Label. Nevertheless, it will be a favorite with those who appreciate a more earthy finish as well as the very reasonable $3.60 to $6.56 retail price tag.

Overall grade: A-: Excellent.

ImageAlthough the singer, songwriter, author, Texas gubernatorial candidate and now cigar seller Kinky Friedman isn’t often called a pirate – he is called a lot of other things, however – and he’s well known for wearing a black hat.

That was reason enough to take time out to try his new line of Kinky Friedman cigars, made by the Habana Cuba Cigar Co. also known for their high-quality Oliveros line. We weren’t sure what to expect, especially from the creator of American country classics such as “They Ain’t Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore” captured in his 1995 album, “From One Good American to Another.” But we tried them anyway.

Kinky Friedman:
[Dominican Republic: available in 5 sizes]
Where do you start with a brand that has shape names like “Kinkycristo” (a 6 1/4-inch by 54-ring torpedo), “Texas Jewboy” (a 6 x 56 torpedo) or “The Governor” (a 5 3/4 x 60 toro)?

This blend was introduced in 2007 and although promoted as medium-bodied, we found it to be a mouth-filler and nicely full-bodied. The wrapper is a very attractive dark, Honduran-grown leaf and there’s a slightly spicy aroma.

The flavor offers a richly caramelized taste with just the finest sandy texture on the finish that tells you that a pinch of spice is present. The balance is spice and sweetness is very well handled and moves evenly from the midway point to the end of the cigar.

Given that it’s made by Habana Cuba, it’s no surprise that this is a very high-quality cigar that can be taken quite seriously . . . if you can stop chuckling at the thought of smoking a Kinkycristo!

All five shapes are offered in boxes of 20 with one of the largest bands ever seen on a cigar. Pricing is on the higher end of the scale at $6.50 to $10 retail per cigar, not including local sales or tobacco taxes. But why not? They aren’t making politicians like Kinky anymore, either!

Overall grade: A-: Excellent.

Spag & Co. and the Kinky Friedman lines aren’t as widely available as Macanudo, Montecristo or Avo. But these cigars reflect unique, individual visions of what cigars should be and are welcome additions to the never-ending discussion of individual taste. After all, how often can you sing the pirate song – or a Kinky Friedman classic – and have a cigar to go with it?!
