Raul Relova of TabaCuba – the Cuban agency responsible for the growing of tobacco and the actual production of cigars on the island – said that the availability of new strains of tobacco which are more disease-resistant and increased availability of irrigation in the fields are the keys to the increase.

The announcement also noted that TabaCuba will raise payments to farmers by up to 50 percent (!) and thus better results are expected. Can a price increase from Habanos, S.A. be far behind?

New Hampshire “cigar bar” bill moving ahead:
The smoking ban instituted in New Hampshire last year allowed smoking in cigar stores, but not in cigar bars, but a new piece of legislation may cure this.

A bill introduced in March by State Senators Joe Kenney (R-Wakefield) and Jacalyn Cilley (D-Barrington) would allow smoking in defined “cigar bars,” which could serve alcoholic beverages (if licensed to do so) and allow smoking if 60 percent of their total revenue came from the sale of cigars and pipe tobacco on the premises. Cilley noted that unlike standard bars, “Nobody walks into a cigar bar without being fully cognizant of what this is.”

According to a story in Foster’s Daily Democrat, a major proponent of the concept was Jonathan Bliss, owner of the Village Cigar Emporium in North Conway, N.H. “We want to be above board here, to know where we stand for certain,” said Bliss in the Foster’s story. “That’s why I started pushing for a legislative definition for a cigar bar.”

Sen. Kenney expects difficulty in the legislative process, but if the bill makes it through the Senate Commerce, Labor and Consumer Protection Committee, it will go to the full Senate for a vote, then to the House and finally to Governor John Lynch. If approved, the new definition would be effective on January 1, 2009.
