Altadis U.S.A. has been continuously active and aggressive in this area for several years and regularly sends notices to the cigar retail trade about its intent. “We hope these arrests send a clear message to the cigar industry and the public in general,” noted Senior Vice President of Marketing Eric Workman in a statement, “that those engaging in cigar counterfeiting will be arrested, their assets will be seized and they ultimately will be held accountable.”

Size of the Dominican cigar industry expanding:
The Dominican Republic (flag shown above) is the world’s largest producer of cigars and the economics of the tobacco trade on the island have never been better.

Figures for 2007 showed that 650 million cigars were exported, worth about $575 million U.S., and the cigar industry – from farm through factory – accounted for 36,000 direct and another 117,000 indirect jobs with a total impact range over about 300,000 people. This includes people actually involved in the trade – farmers, factory workers and so on – and support personnel who are not employees such as truck drivers and food service workers contracted to help or who work for industry suppliers.

The Tobacco Institute (Intabaco) report noted that there are 6,150 active growers and that exports rose 18 percent in 2007 over the average of 550 million cigars over the previous four years.

Of that total of 650 million in exports, the U.S. accounted for about 90 percent at 586.6 million units, including premium handmades (177.6 million), machine-mades (408.7 million) and little cigars (0.3 million), which means about 63 million Dominican cigars are being sold elsewhere. Considering that total Cuban production for export is estimated at about 150-160 million, it appears that the Dominican share of the worldwide market is steadily increasing.

And the winner is:
