GETTING TO THE NUB AND STAYING THERE Print E-mail

  • “Connecticut” (beige label), grown in Ecuador, with a medium body, available in the 354, 358, 460 and 466 sizes only;

  • “Habano” (brown label), grown in Nicaragua and yielding a full-bodied taste and made in four sizes: 358, 460, 464 and 466.

    Whose idea was this? The Nub line was developed by Jose Oliva and former Oliva sales representative Sam Leccia, who has sold Oliva cigars in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania since 2004. The concept was developed in mid-2007, and while it initially met some internal resistance, it is being produced and is now shipping to stores.

    You’ll probably be able to see the Nub line for yourself at a smokeshop near you, as an aggressive schedule of 54 events has been created for stores in 23 states. The tour started on April 1 and runs through September 13, with a supercharged Mini Cooper S convertible – a “nub” of a car – to be present at all events and given away to one Nub smoker at the end of the schedule.

    All sizes are made in Nicaragua and offered in boxes of 24 and retail pricing (not including local sales and tobacco taxes) ranges from $4.00 for the 358, up to $6.50 for the 466 Habano. Need we say to take extra care when lighting these cigars, especially with a torch!

    Black Pearl adds champagne to its luxury goods line-up:
    Cigar fans are already well familiar with Doug Wood’s La Perla Habana brand and the hot-selling Black Pearl series, especially the 2007-introduced Morado (purple) line.

    However, you may not know that Wood has paired his Black Pearl cigar lines – Cobre, Rojo and Morado – with wines and has now introduced Champearl, a California sparkling wine.

    It’s a North Coast Brut that’s described as “golden, lean and totally dry” and becomes the fourth wine in his Black Pearl line-up. The others are Black Pearl Rojo, a Cabernet; Black Pearl Cobre, a Chardonnay and Black Pearl Morado, a blend of Cabernet and Merlot.

    Wood notes that the Black Pearl empire now includes cigars, coffees and wines. “We carefully selected three categories of complementary products, believing many lovers of the good life enjoy all three.”

    The new Champearl is available direct from Black Pearl Wines online and will begin appearing on store shelves this August.
