Dr. Zarcecki is in the house: Cigar Magazine columnist Tom Zarzecki wrote what a lot of cigar smokers think to themselves almost every day in the Spring 2008 issue, and it’s worth repeating. In short: “I am here to certify that smoking fine cigars is, without a doubt, good for you!” He explains himself at length in several subsequent pages, but at the core: Listen again as I say it loud and proud: The act of smoking fine cigars is good for you – good for the mind, good for the soul, and an absolute benefit to the human condition. A good cigar is a best friend in moments of reflection, a calming influence when the brain is frenzied, and a stimulating boost when your battery has run low. In the words [of] Charles H. Spurgeon, a highly influential British Baptist preacher during the mid-1800s, “When I have found intense pain relieved, a weary brain soothed, and calm refreshing sleep obtained by a cigar. I have felt faithful to God, and have blessed His Name.”Zarzecki notes that moderation is important and that he usually smokes one or two cigars a day. And he acknowledges that the anti-tobacco crowd could care less what he or any other cigar lover thinks, so it’s important to spread the word to those with open minds and closed mouths as opposed to those whose minds are closed and mouths are continuously in action.
