In a factory like the Tabacalera de Garcia, cigars made by the rollers are checked for quality in construction and draw and are then placed in the massive “cigar room” for 25 days at about 70 percent humidity, primarily to allow all of the cigars to settle down to a water content of 14 percent (shown on the home page). When we saw it, the “cigar room” had about five million cigars in various stages of conditioning. After going through the water content-leveling process, the cigars then go to sorting, banding and packing. That’s not needed with a cigar that’s right off a roller’s table at a small factory or at a cigar-rolling event, but don’t be surprised if the burn isn’t perfect. It’s the water. Smokeshop owner foils would-be robber: The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported that a would-be robber wearing a scarf over his face and carrying an axe entered Sam’s Cigars in Vista, California and asked the shop owner for cash. The incident took place at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday and the store was otherwise empty. Instead of cooperating, the owner (name intentionally omitted) grabbed the keys and he and his wife ran out of the store and locked the would-be robber inside. “Deputies arrived,” said Lt. Mike McClain of the Sheriff’s Department, “and found the man standing inside in front of the door making some pretty rude gestures to the shop owner.” The police took the would-be robber into custody. Hammer time: Despite eBay’s policy of not allowing tobacco sales on its site, auctions for Fuente Fuente Opus X cigars are now quite common as collectibles. We checked out the latest sales to see if the prices were maintaining their normal level of about $20 per cigar. It’s clear that the Opus X is maintaining its elite position now 12 years after its introduction, a remarkable feat. The other brand which has maintained its popularity on eBay is Padron and lively interest is being shown in the recently-introduced Padron 80th Anniversary perfectos (6 3/4 x 52), offered in boxes of eight. Six boxes of these cigars have been sold in the past week, ranging from a low of $190.00 ($23.75 per cigar) up to $285.95 or $35.74 each. Another is up for auction now with an asking price of $289.95 ($36.24 each), or the best offer.
