> The Avo tasting included 15 cigars from eight different lines: Avo 787, Avo 80th Anniversary, Avo Classic, Domine Avo, Avo Lounge Edition (more on this below), Avo Maduro, Avo Signature and Avo XO.

The four top scoring-cigars in this test received four stars out of a possible five: Avo 787 Robusto, Domaine Avo 20, and the Avo Lounge Edition Double Corona and Toro. The Avo Lounge cigars sport a light blue band and are only sold in the Avo Lounge inside Otto Fischer’s Art Cigar shop in Aarau, Switzerland. These cigars are made, like all Avos, in the Dominican Republic and use a Nicaraguan wrapper over a Dominican binder and Dominican-grown fillers.

> The general tasting included some cigars not widely seen and the tough grading panel awarded a high of 4 1/2 stars to just two cigars, both from Cuba: the Punch Robusto (Edicion Regional Suiza: 4 7/8 inches by 50 ring) and the Trinidad Ingenios (Edicion Limitada 2007: 6 1/2 x 42).

There were eight other cigars which received four stars:

Cuba:
Montecristo No. 4 Reserva (5 1/8 x 42).

Dominican Republic:
Bossner Prinz von Hohenzollern (6 7/8 x 45);
Davidoff Royal Salomones (8 1/4 x 57);
Santa Damiana Seleccion Especial 2005 (7 x 48).

Honduras:
Maria Mancini Edicion 2007 (6 x 48).

Nicaragua:
Serie 601 Blue Maduro Toro (6 1/4 x 54);
Serie 601 Red Habano Robusto (5 x 50);
Casa de Torres Toro Tubo (5 7/8 x 52).

The Bossner and Casa de Torres are not sold in the U.S. and the Davidoff Royal Salomones is found only in Davidoff stores!

  • Dion Giolito garnered wide interest with his Illusione line of cigars showcased last year at the RTDA show in Houston. This year, he is introducing a new brand called Cruzado, in six shapes. Made at the Tabacos Puros de Nicaragua factory – the same factory which makes Joya de Nicaragua – this new line features a creamy flavor with a medium-to-full body.

  • An area of constant concern is the political situation in Nicaragua, where Daniel Ortega is once again the country’s president. But Nestor Plasencia, Jr., head of the Nicaraguan Cigar Guilder Association (NCGA) told the magazine in an interview that “I think we need to keep an eye on the political situation. We speak with a lot of politicians and bankers and people who have invested a lot of money in the country and these people are not afraid. We see that the government is following all the macroeconomic rules. It is following the rules of the IMF and the World Bank. Businesses seem to be very safe, the government will never take the land.”

    Plasencia notes that he is more concerned, at present, with the danger to Nicaraguan cigars from the SCHIP tax in the U.S., which would destroy its biggest market.

  • An excellent guide to cigars in and around Madrid. Spain, thanks to its long relationship with Cuba, has the lowest prices on Havana cigars in Europe and even with the smoking restriction instituted throughout the country, still has places for enthusiasts to enjoy their favorites. One remarkable institution in the city is the Club Pasion Habanos, a private club which according to manager Macarena Ordonez, has 10,000 members nationwide!

    There’s also an excellent article on how cigar masters create and test new blends and an increasingly long list of noteworthy cigar events in Europe, showing that as smoking bans creep across the continent, manufacturers and distributors are working ever harder to keep their cigars in front of smokers.
