Los Angeles, April 23 – The Avo cigar lines have almost enough styles and shapes to suit every smokers, but there’s always room for one or two more.

Both the Avo Classic and Avo XO lines have “added” one shape, both smaller cigars that give Avo fans a chance to enjoy a shorter smoke:

  • The Avo Classic line, which originally had as many as 12 shapes on the roster, introduced a seventh shape to the current line-up, the Avo Corona. It’s five inches long by 43 ring, similar in style to the now extinct Avo No. 8, which was a 5 1/2-inch by 40-ring corona that was part of the original line. The new Corona is offered in boxes of 25 with retail prices of $6.50 each and $162.50 per box.

    Noted Avo brand manager Matt Kern, “it’s a format that we found is very complimentary to the blend as well as a shape and price point that we hope will attract and introduce cigar smokers who have not previously tried Avo cigars.”

  • The Presto size was deleted from the Avo line last year, but it’s now been re-introduced in a smaller, handier size.

    The old Presto was five inches by 31 ring, but the new Presto is just 3 3/4 inches in length with a ring gauge of 43, adding to a growing line of cigars of less than four inches, but with corona or robusto-sized ring gauges. The new Presto is being offered in boxes of 25, but also handy packs of four for $5.40 per cigar, $21.60 for the four-pack and $135.00 per box.

    Says Kern, “The XO Presto was introduced to provide smokers who may have limited time to smoke an option, without having to forego the balance and complexity found in Avo cigars.”

    These are the second and third Avo introductions for 2008 after the annual limited-edition cigar, the Avo Tesoro, was introduced earlier in the year.

    Smoking ban to hit cigar-loving Atlanta manager?
    Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox (pictured on the home page) is rarely seen after a game without a cigar in his mouth and he’s a devoted connoisseur of the leaf. Which is why he was reported as “startled” to learn about a possible impediment to his post-game smoke at Shea Stadium in New York this weekend.

    The Mets have a new, no-smoking policy throughout the stadium this season, their final one at Shea Stadium before they move to under-construction Citi Field next door in 2009. Asked about the policy, Cox first asked if the reporter meant the new stadium, but when told it applied to Shea Stadium, he said “I think that’s a great idea.”

    But he was then asked if the ban applied to him and he said, “The clubhouse doesn’t count.” The Mets were asked about the issue and said they would speak to Cox about it, but didn’t say whether or how they would enforce the ban.
