A new week brings a raft of discounts from Famous Smoke ShopLos Angeles, September 27 – Remember Mel Brooks’s brilliant 1974 send-up of films about the Old West, “Blazing Saddles”? Remember (the unforgettable) Madeline Kahn as Lili von Shtupp? Remember her song “I’m Tired,” which she called “the song that closed Poland”? Although I haven’t been to Warsaw, I know how she feels. We spend more time keeping up with Arthur Zaretsky and his team at Famous Smoke Shop for our comparison shopping roster in our CigarWire subscription service than any other retailer we cover. But part experimenter, part mad scientist, we found some gems to report from Arthur’s dozens of price changes: • Arturo Fuente Privada No. 1 (6 3/4 x 44; maduro), box of 25, was $90.95, now $79.95. • Ashton Magnum (5x50) sampler of 4, was $26.95, now $19.95. • Astral Grand Reserve 1992 Perfeccion (7x48), box of 25, was $64.95, now $49.95. • Avo Limited Edition Legacy (5 3/4 x 48), box of 12, was $129.95, now $99.95. • Carlos Torano Tribute Churchill (7x50), five-pack, was $62.95, now $53.95. • Hoyo de Monterrey Seleccion Royale (6½ x 50), box of 20, was $99.95, now $89.95. • Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 five-pack sampler, was $24.95, now $19.95. • La Aurora Preferidos Treasure Sampler five-pack, was $85.95, now $69.95. • Montecristo Serie V Mini Belicoso (5x48), box of 25, was $202.95, now $179.95. • Partagas Black Label Maximo (6x50), box of 20, was $93.95, now $79.95. I also like Famous’s shopping program that not only shows when an item is out of stock, but when the stock level gets low. It’s very comforting to know whether the item is available (“Y”), not available (“N”) or low (showing a number, usually 3 or less). For J-R, the Jar is a Star: We’re written glowingly about the fabulous Office Jars re-introduced by Altadis USA for its H. Upmann Vintage Cameroon line. They’re finally available on-line at J-R Cigars, with your choice of five different sizes, all for the same price as if you bought a box of 25 without the Jar! Now that’s a deal! The five sizes range in price from $109-135 and the cigars are excellent. But the best part is the jar and it’s a great holiday gift for your favorite cigar lover, even if that’s you! Happy Birthday: Great story in the Great Falls (Montana) Tribune on Saturday about 108-year-old Walter Breuning, who had to give up smoking cigars at age 99 before he couldn’t afford them. In a story in the Tribune about his birthday last Tuesday, his loss of the pleasure was mentioned . . . and he started receiving gifts. According to Saturday’s story, he first received two Havana cigars from an on-line merchant in London (where was U.S. Customs on that one?). Said Breuning, “They were $12 cigars, and they were good.” Then a former Great Falls resident sent a couple more and another reader sent a full box of 24. More are still arriving. Writer Eric Newhouse asked Breuning what he thought of his first cigar after a nine-year absence? “It was good. Oh man, it tasted good.” Smoke ‘em in good health, Mr. Breuning. ~ Rich Perelman
