WHAT ABOUT THE GRIFFIN'S? Print E-mail

The Griffin’s line includes a broad range of shapes, including two in tubes, at retail prices of $5.00 up to $10.20 each.
Overall grade: A-: Excellent.

The Griffin’s Fuerte:
[Dominican Republic: available in 3 sizes]
Following the trend toward more powerful cigars, The Griffin’s Fuerte was introduced in 2002. It also features an Ecuadorian-grown wrapper with Dominican binder and filler leaves, but it’s an entirely different cigar.

Easy to spot with its second band that reads “Fuerte,” this edition of The Griffin’s has a medium-to-full body and a bold, spicy aroma.

As its name implies – “fuerte” means “strong” in Spanish – this is a more forthright cigar than the regular blend. There is a light but clear caramelized note in the flavor, but it is dominated by spicy tones and a long, spicy finish..

The balance between these elements is quite impressive as the cigar never becomes harsh or overpowering. It paints a consistent taste pattern and showcases an easy draw and an even burn in all three sizes.

It is again not a suitable cigar for a beginner, but will be best appreciated by veteran smokers . . . on a full stomach! Its outstanding consistency and balance also make it a fine choice as a late-night cigar with an adult beverage.

The Griffin’s Fuerte is priced from $5.40 up to $9.30 each and is not for everyone. But for those who prefer power and spice in their smokes, this is a cigar to discover and enjoy.

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

The Griffin’s line also has had a limited-edition cigar issued in four consecutive years from 2004 through 2007 and a fifth is expected later this year. For the enthusiast who prefers complexity and depth in flavor combined with excellent craftsmanship, The Griffin’s is an excellent choice. It may not be as famous as some of its stablemates, but it is a blend that achieves the world-class quality that Grobet wanted for himself and for his club almost a quarter-century ago.

Ashtrays go old school thanks to Drew Estate:
The ever-inventive Jonathan Drew and his team at Drew Estate are as graphically-oriented as any cigar company on the planet. So it was no surprise that their new catalog at last week’s Tobacco Plus Expo in Las Vegas included their throwback line of crystal-clear ashtrays with ancient brand artwork incorporated into each one.

These are full-sized cigar ashtrays dominated by the brand art in two styles: a rectangular, four-by-six-inch ashtray and a six-inch round ashtray. The rectangulars come in eight styles: “Bank Note,” “Legal Tender,” “Smoke Room,” “Moon,” “American Perfecto,” “Hand Made,” “Habana” and “Goddess” using an old La Revalenta brand label. The two circulars come in “Chief Broadleaf” and “Raw Leaf” styles, both using old artwork.

These are neat pieces and are reasonably priced at $49.95 for the rectangulars and $65.00 for the circular styles.
