WHY NOT USE CUBAN TOBACCO? Print E-mail

Before the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba was imposed in 1962, the vast majority of premium – i.e., handmade – cigars sold in the U.S. were so-called “Clear Havanas” which were made exclusively from Cuban-grown tobaccos. Cigars made in Havana were only a small percentage of premium cigars sold in the U.S.: in the recent article we reviewed from the trade journal Smokeshop, former Consolidated Cigar chief Dick DiMeola noted that Havana-made cigars were only 7.5 percent of premium sales in the U.S. in the five years prior to the start of the embargo.

Given the likely available supplies and the competition from Dominican, Honduras and Nicaraguan brands, there’s no tidal wave of Cuban cigars ready to drench the American market if the embargo ends anytime soon. And the cigars that will be offered will be very high in price.

But wouldn’t you be interesting in trying a new cigar from Macanudo or Arturo Fuente or Camacho that was made with Cuban leaf? That’s what cigar makers are thinking about now as they monitor the changes in the Cuban regime under Raul Castro and what might happen under a new American President in 2009. We have been told, repeatedly, that those meetings are ongoing . . . and getting more intense.

A reader’s-only special for CigarCyclopedia.com readers!
There are plenty of excellent cigars that you can pay a high price for. A quality cigar at a reasonable price is worth looking for, and you can get quite a deal on a good one.

The Dominican Delicias brand was introduced in 2003 with a genuine Connecticut-grown wrapper and Dominican-grown binder and filler leaves. It’s made at the respected MATASA factory and has a mild-to-medium body in four convenient sizes.

Mike’s Cigars is now offering our readers a two-for-one special on all four sizes, presented in elegant, slide-top boxes of 25: two boxes of the No. 550 robusto (5 inches by 50 ring) or No. 643 lonsdale (6 inches by 43 ring) for $39.95, or two boxes of the No. 650 toro (6 inches by 50 ring) or No. 750 double corona (7 inches by 50 ring) for $49.95. That’s an average of 80 cents to $1 each! How can you resist?

Click here to take advantage of this readers-only special. Our thanks to Mike’s for the offer; you can buy as many of these specials as you like until 9 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, May 12, or until supplies run out.

And the winner is:

Did you know?

Because Fonseca Port is so well known, some 1920s Fonseca cigars came in canisters shaped like bottles of Port!
