Meanwhile, he’s taking the time to promote the new Tempus line with in-store promotions and tastings that are rolling out across the country. Cueto comes through with a new record cigar: Although his planned 98-foot-long cigar would have been far short of the Guinness-listed world record for the longest cigar ever, Cuban master roller Jose Castelar Cairo (pictured above) didn’t panic. He ordered more tobacco. Already a three-time world-record setter, “Cueto” completed his latest attempt during the International Tourism Fair in Havana and ended with a surprising new record cigar of 148 feet, nine inches (45.35 m). That’s considerably longer than the 135-foot, 2-inch cigar (41.20 m) created last year by Puerto Rican roller Patricio Pena. “”The best in the world, no?” said Cairo – known as “Cueto” – after he finished the cigar, with the help of six assistants, over a six-day period. “It’s an honor for Cuba and I feel satisfied to do it for Cuba,” he told the Reuters news agency during a party following the completion of his record effort. The new record cigar is about two inches (128 ring gauge) thick. His plan to roll a 98-foot-long cigar held through Thursday, but when told of the certification of Pena’s cigar by Guinness, he went into overdrive and added another 50 feet onto the giant tobacco roll! He told Reuters that he finished the cigar at about 5 a.m. on Friday morning. The cigar itself was rolled in a special room at the famed El Morro Castle that overlooks the Havana harbor. The official measurement was taken by British diplomat Chris Stimpson, who said he would submit it for Guinness world-record recognition. Boxing fans, you have a new cigar: In decades past, cigars and boxing were almost inseparable, with ringside bigshots enjoying a smoke during high-profile heavyweight matches at venues from Madison Square Garden on down. That tradition has been continued by Lew Rothman’s J-R Cigars, which introduced its Nat Sherman Champion cigars last month. Made in Nicaragua from all-Nicaraguan tobaccos, it comes in three sizes, each named for a legendary boxing champion: Each of the sizes is offered in glass tubes in boxes of 10, but are not quite available just yet. ~ Rich Perelman CLASSIFIED ADVERTISINGCigar Humidors and Cigar Accessories at Humidor Vault!
