McCalla advises, however, “We are far from winning this fight and I urge all of you to make sure you are sharing this information and Action Alert with your employees and customers. Since initiation of the Action Alert on May 9, we have had over 500 messages sent to Lansing. While a good start, it is not enough – we need your customers to continue contacting their representatives and urge them to support and pass the exemption for retail tobacco shops!”

  • In Colorado, the long-running battle over what is a “cigar bar” continues without end.

Anti-smoking legislators decided not to try, again, to tighten the state’s law on the definition of a “cigar bar.” The bill was badly drafted to define a “cigar bar” as any business which receives five percent or more of its revenue from tobacco products. So, naturally, a bar called Orio’s in Durango tallied up its cigarette sales and declared itself a “cigar bar” under the law and people are still smoking there today.

State senator Betty Boyd told the Durango Herald that there was no reason to try for a change since the same legislators who defeated two previous attempts at narrowing the law were likely to vote the same way again. “At this point,” she said, “it’s the same cast of characters, so why should anyone expect anything different? Isn’t that the definition of mental illness?” You would know, sister.

    Swedish Match names youthful C.E.O.:
Some people may think cigars and snuff are for an older crowd, but not Swedish Match, the parent of General Cigar Company and Cigars International.

On Monday, 37-year-old Lars Dahlgren was named the company’s new Chief Executive Officer, to replace 58-year-old Sven Henrikes on June 1. Henrikes announced that he would retire last year, but has stayed on during the transitional period.

Dahlgren has been with Swedish Match since 1996 and has served as the company’s Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since 2004. The new C.F.O. will be 38-year-old Joakim Tilly, promoted from his existing position in the finance group.

Of Dahlgren, Swedish Match Chairman Conny Karlsson said “Lars Dahlgren has done an outstanding job as CFO of Swedish Match, and has during his years with the Company gained extensive experience from the tobacco industry and the Company, including its markets, competitors and consumers as well as the investor community. Lars knows the challenges and opportunities facing us, which makes Lars an excellent President and CEO, taking Swedish Match forward.”
