Team Montecristo (?) poker player qualifies for World Series
Adam Koetje of Gainesville, Florida qualified for the World Series of Poker “Main Event” in Las Vegas, Nevada in July by winning the third annual Smoke Inn Series of Poker in May. His victory, after more than 7 1/2 hours of play, earned him the right to represent “Team Montecristo.”

It turns out, however, that Altadis, U.S.A. has not yet set up its own team of poker players, a la its Team Te-Amo Senior PGA golf group. “We sponsored the Smoke Inn in a poker tournament they held by providing cigars and prizes,” wrote Altadis U.S.A. Vice President Janelle Rosenfeld in an electronic mail message. “They said if they had a player qualify, they would call him a Montecristo player.”

Thus, the so-far one-player “Team Montecristo” was born. While Koetje will have his hands full at the WSOP Main Event, he certainly won’t be lacking for cigars to smoke while he plays.

Canadian province’s display ban on tobacco called “futile exercise”
The Toronto-based National Post newspaper called the province’s law to keep tobacco products behind a cover in retail stores “a futile exercise” in a Tuesday editorial. It further noted:

“Ontario's government has reasoned that the new law will convince people to quit smoking, leaving fewer stroke victims and lung cancer patients taking up hospital beds. This argument fails to take into account the savings smokers create by not lingering into old age, when health care costs typically zoom into the stratosphere. But even setting the cold cost calculus aside, it is very hard to believe that keeping cigarettes behind a black curtain will do anything to dissuade people from buying them. If that were all it took to kick a nicotine habit, smokers would be flocking to drapery stores, instead of buying nicotine gum and patches.

“The Ontario government has succeeded in adding a financial and practical burden to retailers. But when it comes to reducing tobacco consumption, it is just blowing smoke.”

The ban on displays of tobacco products in Canada now includes Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan. When this regulation is introduced in the U.S., it’s not clear whether it will pass First Amendment tests for commercial speech. But you can be sure this is coming.
