The new DR Global factory makes their newest releases: the Cusano 59 Rare Cameroon, Cusano Habano LXI Sun Grown and the Cuvee Rouge and Cuvee No. 151. The other Cusano and Cuvee lines – Cusano 18, Cusano Corojo ‘97 and their four bundled blends and the Cuvee Blanc – continue to be manufactured at Tabadom’s Occidential Cigars factory, also in Santiago in the Dominican Republic. The Cuvee 151 was supposed to be made in Nicaragua with a Costa Rican-grown maduro wrapper, but import problems made it impossible to manufacture the cigar there and the Nicaraguan-made edition was never release. Production was moved to the new DR Global facility where it is being made now. Tobacco as a clean-energy fuel source? Italian geneticist Corrado Fogher has created a process by which, he says, oil from tobacco seeds can be turned into a biofuel to run everything from “water boilers to power generators,” according to a Reuters story last week. Fogher’s Plantechno S.r.l. biotech firm is championing the use of tobacco because it can be grown in areas where food crops, such as corn, cannot survive. That would allow more crops to be used for food instead of for fossil-fuel alternatives such as corn for ethanol. “I think it holds a lot of promise,” Fogher said. He notes that, in addition to relieving pressure on food crops, tobacco also grows much more densely than other crops. For every hectare (2.5 acres) on which it is grown, tobacco provides about two tons of oil, about twice as much as soy. Fogher, a non-smoker, told Reuters that the oil can be used by itself for stationary motors like a power generator, or can be mixed with palm oil for a biodiesel fuel for vehicles. A important test of the fuel will come in October, when it will be used to power a one-megawatt hospital power generator. And the winner is . . .
