Imperial Tobacco to close 107-year-old home of Castella brand in Bristol
As an important step in the integration of Altadis, S.A. into Imperial Tobacco, the latter announced a cut of about 2,440 jobs or six percent of its workers as six facilities will be closed and production shuffled among the plants of the combined companies.

Imperial has, at present, about 40,000 employees, spread across Europe and cuts will affect most of the countries in which manufacturing is present. According to Imperial:

  • In Britain, about 260 jobs will be cut out of 1,700 (15.3%), including the closure of the cigar factory in Bristol which started in 1901. About 75 workers who produced the well-known Castella and Classic brands will lose their jobs because of that closure by September of 2009. However, the company headquarters will remain in Bristol.

  • In France, employment will take a major hit as 1,060 jobs will be cut out of 4,700 (22.5%). The sales forces of the two companies will be merged and the cigar-making facility in Strasbourg will be closed.

  • In Germany, a net of 250 jobs out of 2,000 (12.5%) will be lost as a Berlin cigarette factory will be closed, ending 420 jobs but other positions will be created in two other cities, creating 170 new jobs.

  • In Spain, about 830 jobs out of 6,700 (12.4%) will be lost as the sales forces of the two companies will be merged. A cigarette factory in Alicante will be closed and all cigar production that was done in Britain and France will be transferred to Altadis' cigar factory in Cantabria, which will be responsible for all of Imperial’s European Union cigar production.

  • In Eastern Europe, about 100 jobs out of 2,100 will be lost in Russia, but a net addition of 200 positions will occur in Poland as some cigarette production is moved there.

In total, six of Imperial’s 58 manufacturing plants will be shuttered. Both French and Spanish unions have said they will fight the cuts, but Imperial’s statement indicated that some workers could be redeployed or take voluntary retirement. The cost of implementing these measures is expected to cost about 600 million Euro (about $937 million U.S.) with annual savings from the restructuring of 300-400 million Euros ($468-624 million U.S.) annually beginning in 2009.

The closure of the Imperial cigar factory in Bristol ends the city’s manufacturing heritage in tobacco, which reaches back into the 18th century. For Imperial, the acquisition of Altadis was sure to bring some pain as the workforces were integrated and this is likely only the beginning.

Multi-million dollar theft of cigars in Australia
Thieves stole $4 million (Australian) worth of cigars from Central Tobacco’s Sydney-area warehouse last week, primarily of the Italian-made Toscani brand.

The break-in was reported to have occurred on June 14 or 15 and electronic alarm system lines were cut to get into the warehouse, according to police.

The main target was 83,000 Toscani cigars, which were set to be distributed throughout Australia, but cigars of two other brands were also stolen: Flor de Filipinas and Il Barone, both made in the Philippines. The Il Barone brand is no longer sold in Australia.

“It was a set-up, of course, it was organized,” said Central Tobacco owner Charles Vella. “They had a shopping list.”

Vella noted however that half of the cigars that were moldy and worthless. “Half of that tobacco will end up in some tip [dump] in a bush because you can’t sell it.” He said that the other cigars will be “very difficult to sell [except] under the counter to the riff raff.”
