CELTICS CELEBRATE WITH CIGARS Print E-mail
ImagePlus: Our Register & Win winner of the week!

Los Angeles, June 25 – Reader K.P. of Sharon, Massachusetts shared this e-mail exchange with Boston-area artist Larry Johnson, whose “Tradition” poster featuring Celtics stars Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen smoking cigars appeared on June 18 (and is on the home page):
Dear Mr. Johnson,

When I opened my email from WEEI titled "Boston Celebrates Banner #17" I was just interested in what was happening around the celebration of a great victory.

When I saw the poster you had drawn in the email, I was blown away.

In this day and age, being a cigar smoker has such a stigma. With so many people worried about political correctness it was refreshing to view your work and better yet that WEEI sent it out to their email list.

Thank you from us cigar smokers, thank you for remembering the tradition of Red.
Then came the response from Johnson:
Thanks my friend. Everybody has causes and we respect and appreciate that. In this case however anybody who does not understand that this was more of a tribute to Red is simply myopic.
There were plenty of Celtics, reportedly including stars Pierce and Garnett who were enjoying post-game cigars, a la the late Celtics coach Red Auerbach, after Boston defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in six games to win their 17th NBA title.

As we’ve noted previously, Auerbach was committed smoker of the Hoyo de Monterrey Governors size (6 1/8 inches by 50 ring) in candela wrappers. You’ll have a hard time finding the candela-wrapped variety, but Auerbach used to buy them from J-R Cigars, which still lists them on its Web site as “Double Claro.” While they last, you too can enjoy Red’s favorite smoke . . . in Celtics green.

C.A.O. ready for the 4th with new “Four for the 4th” Sampler
The ever-inventive Tim Ozgener has a new way for you to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th with the C.A.O. America “Four for the 4th” sampler (pictured above).

The four-cigar set includes two standard sizes from the C.A.O. America line introduced last year and two new sizes made specially for the set:

  • The standard sizes include the Potomac, a 5-inch by 56-ring robusto and the Monument, 6 1/4-inch by 54-ring torpedo, both offering the unique pin-striped, double-wrapper of Connecticut Shade leaf peeking out from the dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper.

  • The new sizes includes the C.A.O. America Box Pressed, a larger robusto of 5 1/2 inches by 55 ring, and the America Reverse Perfecto, a stunning 6-inch by 60-ring cigar in which the Broadleaf wrapper is inside the Connecticut Shade leaf, reversing the normal production style.
