Virginia store to hold “Hawaiian shirt” contest You know it’s summertime when the Hawaiian shirts come out. Gary Pesh, the inventive owner of the seven-store Old Virginia Tobacco Company chain is holding the “First Annual Best/Worst Hawaiian Shirt Contest” on Saturday at the OVTC store in Kingstowne, Virginia. The contest will be held between 12-4 p.m. and entrants should wear the “loudest, ugliest shirt you can find” and a panel of experts (or whoever Pesh designates) will determine the winner. The prize is a box of C.A.O. America cigars (of course) and there will be in-store specials on all stocked lines of C.A.O. cigars. Can’t wait for the pictures on this one! Strong cigar sales at the Buick Open Last week’s Buick Open stop on the PGA Tour at the Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan was not just a good one for tournament winner Kenny Perry, but also Kastle Casa de Cuba, which was selling cigars at the event. Jay Ghoneim, running the store’s booth at the tournament told WEYI-NBC 25 (Clio, Michigan) that “We saw a peak in our business come spring time, summer time. It’s the best time to be outdoors, smoking cigars, enjoying fine games such as golf.” Ghoneim added being outdoors encourages cigar smokers, but also “A couple of days ago Kid Rock is walking around with John Daly smoking. I think it’s generation to generation.” You can imagine that those two were giving each other pointers on cigars and other things during the Pro-Am. Daly, however, missed the cut in the tournament, shooting a 72 and 74 (146). U.S. Treasury penalizes three buyers of Cuban cigars The Office of Foreign Assets Control, a unit of the U.S. Treasury, released its May penalties last week and announced three penalties against individuals who purchased Havana cigars over the Internet. All three were fairly small cases: Through May 31, OFAC has announced 13 penalties against individual Cuban cigar buyers and a fine total of $14,119.23, an average of $1,086.10 per fine. UCLA study says diet can help prevent lung cancer A new study conducted at UCLA indicates that “Tobacco smokers who eat three servings of fruits and vegetables pe day and drink green or black tea may be protecting themselves for lung cancer.” The story, which appeared in the on-campus publication “Today,” noted that the study was published in the June issue of the journal Cancer. According to the story by Kim Irwin, “UCLA researchers found that smokers who ingested high levels of natural chemicals called flavonoids in their diet had a lower risk of developing lung cancer, an important finding since more than 90% of lung cancers are caused by tobacco smoking.” Lead researcher Dr. Zuo-Feng Zhang said the study reviewed the diets of 558 people with lung cancer and 837 people who did not have the disease. The findings showed that eating strawberries, apples, beans, onions and Brussels sprouts and drinking green or black teas were the most effective in providing certain flavonoids (water-soluble plant pigments) that counteract damage to tissues. “Since this study is the first of its type, I would usually be hesitant to make any recommendations to people about their diet,” said Zhang. “We really need to have several larger studies with similar results to confirm our finding. However, it’s not a bad idea for everyone to eat more fruits and vegetables and drink more tea.” The story noted Zhang’s comment that the flavonoids protect against lung cancer by blocking the formation of blood vessels by cancerous tumors so that the tumors have room to grow. The flavonoids can also stop cancer cells from growing, which allows them to expire normally. “The naturally occurring chemicals ,ay be working to reduce the damage caused by smoking,” Zhang said.
