All-volunteer initiative signature drive misses ballot by 5% “We take great pride in the fact that, without any large money contributed by outside special interest groups, we almost got there.” That’s Rain City Cigar owner Joe Arundel of Seattle, Washington, who led the effort to place an initiative on the state’s November ballot that would eased the harshest smoking ban in the nation to allow smoking in cigar shops, cigar bars and private clubs. Signatures were collected in cigar shops, clubs and elsewhere and with 225,000 signatures required to be collected by July 3, the coalition was able to amass a little more than 213,000, short of the requirement. |
