CIGAR TRADE CONVENES IN VEGAS Print E-mail

Naturally, there will be dozens of parties and social events on the calendar; Altadis U.S.A.’s opening-night retailer reception is annually one of the largest events in the show and C.A.O.’s annual party is usually the wildest. This year’s affair is at The Palms Casino Hotel and will feature rock legends Lynryd Skynryd as the entertainment, the first time in memory that such a high-profile band was employed at this trade show.

New business arrangements will also be on display at the show. This will be the first convention for Altadis U.S.A. under the ownership of Imperial Tobacco. For executives of C.A.O.’s parent, ST Cigar Group (a.k.a. Henri Wintermans), holding $3.9 billion from the sale of their cigarette division, this could be a scouting trip for an acquisition. It will also be C.A.O.’s first show as distributor for Torano Cigars and for the Dunhill brand.

We’ll have coverage from Las Vegas daily with all the highlights from the floor and from the fun surrounding the show.

General Cigar wins trademark infringement suit
The U.S. District Court in Nevada granted General Cigar summary judgement, a permanent injunction and compensatory and treble damages of more than $770,000 against Nevada-based Cohiba Caribbean’s Finest.

The Associated Press reported that defendant Philip Restifo was complying with the order of the court, issued June 30, that stopped all operations involving "Cohiba Caribbean's Finest" cigars and rum.

"As of the 30th, we stopped the sales of the rum and pulled down our Web sites," Restifo told the news service. Restifo said he stopped sales of “Cohiba Caribbean’s Finest” cigars after General Cigar filed the case in May 2006. The court awarded the damage amount based on the estimated sales of the cigars and rum under the Cohiba name from 2000-2006.

General is the adjudicated owner of the Cohiba trademark in the U.S., having defeated a claim to the mark by Habanos, S.A. in February 2006.

General may have trouble collecting much, if any, of the damages it won in the case. According to the AP, Restifo “said he sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection four days before the ruling.”

Hellboy enjoying a cigar, on and off the screen
While not causing as much of a ruckus as the cigar-smoking general in “The Incredible Hulk,” the action movie “Hellboy II” also features some cigar scenes with Ron Perlman’s main character, who’s quite happy to have a cigar in his mouth.

Perlman himself (no relation; different spelling) was asked by New York magazine if the cigars in the movie were real or fake. “Oh, I’m smoking a real cigar!” he said. “Real cigars and real good cigars. I smoke the same cigars in the movie that I smoke in real life.

“These days I’m smoking a Nicaraguan, which is beautifully blended and rolled.”

Asked how he could do “take after take smoking a cigar without puking,” Perlman roared back, “Dude, I smoke so many cigars in the course of a day that it’s not dramatically different.”
