IPCPR CONCLUDES ON QUIET NOTE Print E-mail

>> Altadis U.S.A. previously announced that it would be distributing the newer lines of the Nat Sherman cigar brand, including the 489, 1400 and Omerta lines. In addition, the much-respected Butera cigar line – made at Altadis’s Tabacalera de Garcia factory in the Dominican Republic – will now be distributed by Altadis U.S.A. This includes the Butera Royal Vintage, Butera Vintage Maduro, Butera Vintage Select and Butera “La Penna” blends.

>> Miami Cigar & Co. is taking over distribution of Tony Borhani’s Bahia lines – Gold, Gold White Label, Icon, Insignias, Maduro Red Label, Trinidad and others – allowing Borhani to concentrate on blending and promoting his lines. “It’s what I do best,” he said at the show, “and I feel great about it.”

>> The prestigious S.T. Dupont line of lighters and men’s jewelry will now be distributed by Lotus MJYX of Warwick, Rhode Island.

Dupont is rebuilding a wing of its Paris factory after a January fire destroyed its polishing and plating departments and stopped production on many items. The factory areas which produced the flints, fuel and leather goods were not affected and the Dupont management is confident of restoring all of its manufacturing capacity by the end of the year.

Limited social scene at this year’s show
In comparison with previous years, the IPCPR party scene was subdued, but there were highlights:

  • The IPCPR’s Gala Opening Reception was to be an elegant affair, at The Venetian Pool area. However, because of a summer shower, the event was moved indoors, where writer Frank Seltzer reports it was !

  • Altadis U.S.A.’s massive Retailer Appreciation Reception might have drawn 2,000 attendees, who feasted on more than a dozen stations (not to mention another half-dozen bar stations) with carved meats, sushi, pastas, salads and multiple hot entrees and two mammoth dessert stations. All attendees received a gift pack of featured Altadis U.S.A. cigars and a new Cigar Savor lighter, but no smoking was allowed in the ballroom.

  • C.A.O.’s annual party was the wildest event on the calendar, held at The Palms Casino Resort. Co-hosted this year by Torano Cigars and Henri Wintermans, there were cigars, food and drink in abundance, but also a 75-minute performance by Lynryd Skynryd, including an encore edition of its “Freebird” song that lasted for 12 minutes!

  • Camacho Cigars hosted a popular after-show lounge on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at a club inside the hotel. There were plenty of Baccarat and Camacho cigars on hand and the site was consistently crowded.

A host of private dinners were held, of course, including the eagerly-awaited annual retailer-appreciation events from Davidoff, General Cigar and, this year, from Drew Estate to honor its new relationship with Tabacos Puros de Nicaragua - makers of Joya de Nicaragua - and founder Alejandro Martinez Cuenca.

Cuenca’s noted in his remarks that Joya de Nicaragua was, during the Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon administrations, the cigar served at White House functions. The practice was ended during the Gerald Ford presidency, but Cuenca’s goal is to return Joya de Nicaragua to its former position as – in his words – “the national cigar of the United States.”
