Instead, you simply press the single-action lever on the right side of the lighter, which spins the wheel and ignites the torch. Clean and simple, and quite elegant, the FlintJet retails for $100 and comes in five lacquered finishes, including black, grey, blue, red and white, each with polished silver accents.

  • Colibri also initiated its new quality-guarantee policy, called the “Eternal Flame Warranty.”

It guarantees that if a new lighter does not work, you can obtain an “Instant Exchange” at your Colibri dealer and get a new one that does work! As the Colibri literature notes, “The only thing that can stop a Colibri lighter from working today is not refilling it correctly with butane.”

The Colibri Lifetime Confidence program differs from the famous Zippo guarantee in that the Colibri program asks users to return their lighter to their dealer rather than send it in to a repair station. But a lifetime guarantee for either is still quite impressive.

New artwork raises money for Cigar Family charity
Along with displays of cigars and humidors, the Tabacalera A. Fuente booths at the IPCPR show was also filled with artwork from Southern California artist Noah Munnerlyn, depicting Carlos and Carlito Fuente and their cigars in unique artworks (“Fuente Fuente Opus X” is shown on the home page).

The Fuentes have named Munnerlyn their “Official Licensed Artist” and prints of his work are being sold to raise funds for the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, a venture of the Fuente and Newman families which supports community and children’s projects in the Dominican Republic.

There were four artworks on display at the show and 675 editions of each are being offered in various sizes and styles, framed and unframed, and priced from $650 to $2,200.

Service to the memory of Gilberto Leon
A Los Angeles legend and one of the few cigar makers left in Southern California, Gilberto Leon, passed away last Monday.

Leon’s tiny shop – Leon Cigars – on 6th Street in midtown Los Angeles was well known to cigar lovers all across the area. The entrance was often blocked with bales of tobacco that had just arrived and for decades, Leon didn’t use a cash register, but made change out of a cigar box.

A detailed obituary in the Los Angeles Times noted that Leon passed away at age 87 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. He was a native of Cuba, of course, and worked in Cuban factories and even had his own shop before being forced by the Castro regime to work in the sugar cane fields for five years. He was then able to leave Cuba and came to Los Angeles in 1971.

He opened Leon Cigars in 1979 and he and two other rollers were able to make about 600 cigars per day. Open six days a week, the store’s Leon blend offered primarily medium-bodied cigars with Ecuadorian wrappers that retailed for $3 to $6 each. It was common to see motorcycle cops park their bikes in front, only to see them return minutes later with a lit Presidentes (7 1/2 inches by 50 ring) firmly clenched in their teeth and trailing smoke as they rode away!

Leon’s third wife, Carmelina, told The Times that she planned to keep the store open (3956 1/2 West 6th Street in Los Angeles, just east of Western Avenue; telephone: (213) 385-3375).

Although the preferred humidity setting for cigars is 70%, temperature control of 70-75 F is equally important.
