IMPERIAL TOBACCO SAYS IT'S ON TARGET Print E-mail

There were seven bids on the jar – cigars included – which reached a final price of $315.00, or $16.57 each discounting the value of the jar itself. That’s pretty good for such a young brand and a nice premium on the suggested retail price of $12 each!

Coming up on August 9 is an auction of what is described as the “cigar lighter” that belonged to rock & roll legend Elvis Presley.

Owned by Elvis impersonator Steve Preston for the last 14 years, it is being offered in a charity raffle in Bolton, England to raise money for the kidney-treatment unit of Hope Hospital.

The black-and-gold, German-made lighter (news reports did not identify the brand) was initially purchased by Presley during his time in the Army while stationed in Germany between 1958-60. It was later given by Presley to his valet, James Caughley, who sold it to the Elvis Presley Museum in Memphis in 1971. It was on display there for 20 years until being sold at auction in Las Vegas when Preston acquired it during a television appearance on the television show Schoenfield’s Quest. The price at auction in 1994 was about $1,800.

The raffle will be held during a concert in which Preston and three other Elvis impersonators will perform.

General Cigar offering new holiday packaging for samplers
Almost lost in the introduction of new cigars at the recent International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association convention and trade show were two samplers in elegant new packaging that will be offered by General Cigar this fall.

The Cohiba Gift Pack isn’t a new idea, with three 5-inch by 54-ring robustos – one each from the Cohiba, Cohiba XV and Cohiba Black lines – offered in a special pack. What is new is the heavy-leather Andre Garcia case that the cigars come on, complete with the Cohiba logo (with the red dot) embossed on the front and a chrome top. The cigars are terrific, but the case is even better; the package is a $59.95 retail item due in stores in November.

The Partagas Decadas 1998 Gift Pack is a stunner and not just for the three Decadas 1998 No. II (5 1/2 x 50) cigars inside. The package includes the cigars in a brilliantly-decorated, slide-off tin made by the same company that has made gorgeous tins for the Fuente Fuente Opus X brand and for Gurkha. In addition, a tin cylinder of branded wooden matches – a new item – is included with the gift-boxed package, priced at $49.99, also due in November.

General also re-introduced the “Four Tastes of Macanudo” (Cafe, Gold Label, Maduro Robust) this month, priced at $17.90 and will offer “Three Powerful Tastes of Punch” (Punch, Punch Gran Puro and Punch Rare Corojo) in September, at just $9.50. Both are in conventional cardboard packs; hence, the lower price points.

Continuing its launch of 60-ring cigars in response to retailer requests, fans of Cohiba, Punch Gran Puro and Sancho Panza can now get cigars in this ring gauge. The new (or now more available) sizes include the Cohiba Gigante (6 x 60), Punch Gran Puro Sesenta (6 1/4 x 60), Sancho Panza Toledo (6 x 60), Sancho Panza Double Maduro Alicante (6 x 60) and Sancho Panza Extra Fuerte Seville (6 x 60).
