CHICAGO IS THE WORST Print E-mail

Not so in politics, of course. After being urged for many years to run, Tabacalera Perdomo’s Nick Perdomo (pictured) is on the ballot for the October 7 election for Town Council Seat 1 in his home town of Miami Lakes, Florida.

The town, actually north of much-larger Miami, has about 24,000 people in it and it does have 23 lakes in it. And Perdomo is hardly running alone; the Miami Herald noted that other candidates include dentist David Bennett, ice cream distributor Peter Diaz and family law attorney Cesar Mestre, Jr. The race is already quite noisy with challenges about qualifications and willingness to debate flying on all sides.

At the recent International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association convention and trade show in Las Vegas, Perdomo was chatting up retailers about his new lines, including the Perdomo Patriarch cigar that salutes his late father, Nicolas. But he was also enthusiastic about his campaign chances.

“I think I’m one of the front-runners,” he said, “so I have a chance, but there is a lot of work left to be done.” He is running based on his business record, having built the Tabacalera Perdomo into a force in the cigar trade, and plans to bring his pencil-sharpening skills to the town, which just lost its Town Manager to nearby Miami Beach, Florida earlier this month.

One of the political issues which concerns Perdomo is a demonstration of support that comes from fund-raising. While he considered simply funding his campaign himself, he has been advised repeatedly to accept contributions from others to show his standing in the community as well as in the national business scene.

So, he is accepting contributions in amounts of up to $250, the maximum that is allowed to be given in Miami Lakes. He’s been the recipient of numerous contributions from others in the cigar trade, some of whom simply walked up to him on the show floor and handed him a check!

If you have interest in contributing, Miami Lakes law requires that contributions be made by personal check in an amount no larger than $250, and must be made out to “Nick Perdomo Campaign.” Contributions cannot be made by credit card or via the Internet. Checks can be sent to: Nick Perdomo Campaign, 5150 N.W. 167th Street, Miami, Florida 33014.

First Miami Lakes, then the world? Perdomo has slimmed down and looked vibrant at the IPCPR, and felt a spot on the Town Council would, from the cigar trade perspective, give him a much better view into the political aspects of the anti-tobacco legislative push which is so prevalent today.

Is there room for a Goddess out there?
Are there too many cigar brands out there? Yes. Is there room for one more? Sure!

Mike Byelick, the owner of MD Cigars in Yuma, Arizona wanted to create a high-quality, mid-market blend that would retail at about $7 each, but that he could sell for less, perhaps $4-5. Thus, the Dea cigar was born.

Byelick notes that “the trend for super strong cigars, I think, is tough for people like me who like loads of flavor, but not a powerhouse cigar that often gets to your stomach. I call it medium-bodied; strong-cigar smokers may call it mild, but its more medium to me.”

He created the blend in concert with Robert Spoden’s Bucanero Cigars and Dea – the Italian word for goddess – is made in Nicaragua. Wrapped in a Nicaraguan-grown Rosado wrapper, the interior leaves are from Costa Rica and Honduras with a Sumatra-seed binder from Ecuador. The Dea line is made in three ultra-popular shapes: Churchill (7 inches by 48 ring), Robusto (5 x 50) and Torpedo (6 x 52). A Costa Rican-grown maduro-wrapped version to be called the “Dea Double Maduro” is also on the way.

Best of all is the price: from $4.53 to $4.83 each, they’re packed in bundles of 20 that run from $73.60 to $78.40 not including local sales and tobacco taxes.

Says Byelick, “I am very proud of Dea and I think people out there can tell all the hard work that went into getting this brand to market.”
