Ron Perlman’s favorite cigar:
The actor who stars in the current release “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” was profiled by Paul Brownfield of the Los Angeles Times last week in a story entitled “Plenty of reasons to have a cigar.”

Although the story didn’t mention it, the 6-2 Perlman has been quoted in other interviews speaking about his current favorite, identified only as a “Nicaraguan” cigar.

But in the photo accompanying Brownfield’s story shows Perlman enjoying a 50-plus ring cigar that is obviously a Joya de Nicaragua blend, either the Antano 1970 or the Celebracion. Either way, he looks happy!

Babe Ruth’s death not due to cigars!
It has long been supposed that the greatest baseball player who ever lived – George Herman “Babe” Ruth – died in 1948 at age 53 because of throat cancer, possibly brought on by a life full of beer, cigars and spirits. But it’s not true.

Dr. William Maloney, a dentist from Ossining, New York, spent more than a year researching the “circumstances” of Ruth’s death and he and a colleague reported in the Journal of the American Dental Association that he actually died of a very rare cancer called Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma that was unlikely to be impacted by either alcohol or tobacco use.

According to the research, noted in a lengthy article in the Journal News of upstate New York, the disease causes less than one percent of the cancer deaths in the U.S., but is more prevalent in southeast Asia and northern Africa. The nasopharynx “is a small area inside the head, above the soft palate and leading to the sinus.”

Furthermore, Ruth also volunteered to be treated with a new, experimental chemotherapy drug called teropetrin, which helped him for a while but ultimately failed. But the information gained from Ruth’s experience with the treatment helped advance chemotherapy science.

“I was stunned,” wrote Ruth’s granddaughter, Linda Ruth Tosetti, to the Journal News. ‘It was the first I was reading, that my grandfather did not have throat cancer. My mother, Dorothy, always thought it was throat cancer, so did the whole country.”

Said Maloney, already a rabid Yankee fan, “They all said he had throat cancer – an easy conclusion – because he was well-known for drinking, smoking and using tobacco. In fact, he died of a very rare cancer. And what I found out was that this larger-than-life celebrity was a pioneer in early cancer research.”

And the winner is:
