Perdomo 2 – Natural wrapper:
[Nicaragua: available in 4 sizes]
Perdomo 2 – actually Perdomo “squared” as the “2" is an exponent – originally debuted in 1999 but the blend was retired in 2007. It returned to national distribution as a limited-edition blend in 2008 at the IPCPR show in Las Vegas.

Both styles – with natural-shade wrappers and with maduro wrappers – are box-pressed and share a second band that says “Limited Edition” on it with the natural-wrapped line sporting a red band with gold lettering (the maduro edition has a yellow band).

The natural-wrapped blend is medium-to-full in body with a light, spicy aroma and a rich caramelized taste. It smokes easily with a medium finish and an absence of spice that makes the taste seems especially sweet.

The brightness of the caramel tones are never out of control and this is a smooth cigar to smoke, with just modest notes of spice and pepper that enter as undertones about halfway through as a transition to the second half. The smooth approach remains in place to the end, with the spiced elements always in a supporting role.

The Perdomo 2 is offered in boxes of 40 for all four sizes and will be a popular choice among smokers looking for smoothness and flavor.

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

Perdomo 2 – Maduro wrapper:
[Nicaragua: available in 4 sizes]
The maduro-wrapper version of the Perdomo 2 limited-edition is, like the natural-wrapped edition, made with all-Nicaraguan-grown leaves. It sports a yellow band and is medium-to-full in body.

The flavor is soft and sweet, with a medium finish and no spice. The brightness of the caramelized taste is higher than the natural-wrapped version, but never out of control. It burns evenly and stays consistent until modest notes of spice and pepper enter in at the end.

Like the natural-wrapped edition, the maduro Perdomo 2 is packed in boxes of 40.

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

Perdomo Patriarch – Maduro wrapper:
[Nicaragua: available in 6 sizes]
Nick Perdomo introduced the Edicion de Silvio, a tribute to his grandfather, in 2003. The Perdomo Patriarch, introduced at the 2008 IPCPR show, is as salute to his father, Nicolas, Sr., who passed away in 2004, but not before starting the Tabacalera Perdomo in Nicaragua in the early 1990s.

The Patriarch is a darkly-dressed, double-banded cigar in its maduro version, made from all Nicaraguan leaves. Medium-to-full in body, it offers a lightly-spiced aroma and a rock solid smoke that burns perfectly.

The flavor is rich in a caramelized way, but with a cleaner, more refined taste that the Perdomo 2 Limited Edition maduro. There’s just an edge of spice on the finish that adds a welcome accent to the end of each puff.

The consistency and smoothness of this cigar are just marvelous and unlike some blends, which can become boring, the Patriarch retains an inviting and fresh approach all the way to the end. It’s only a tad less intense at the end than at the start.

In addition to its wonderful burning qualities and texture, it’s also quite accessible at $6.00 each for the 5 5/8-inch by 46-ring Corona Extra up to $9.00 for the Torpedo (6 1/2 x 54). All six sizes are offered in boxes of 20.

Overall grade: A+: Outstanding.

Both of the La Aroma series and all three new Perdomo blends were just great. For those who say that today is one of the best times ever for cigar lovers in terms of the quality of the tobaccos available and the resulting blends, here are additional exhibits.
