Vogel Green – Maduro wrapper:
[Costa Rica: available in 5 sizes]
The Vogel Green series is offered in the same five shapes as the Vogel Red and was also introduced at the 2008 IPCPR show. But it’s made from a completely different set of Cuban-origin seeds, and this maduro-wrapped blend was developed from seeds originally planted in the famous San Juan y Martinez area of Cuba’s legendary Vuelta Abajo in 1950.

Although sweet as might be expected from a maduro, the taste is full-bodied with a toasty aroma.

There’s a rich, sweet flavor that has elements of caramel and a medium-to-long finish that also emphasizes a discrete sweetness. It’s a lean and clean taste that’s quite pleasing and holds your interest throughout. The consistency of this blend is terrific and the balance of flavor and aroma are marvelous.

Also priced at $11-12 apiece, the Vogel Green is offered in boxes of 25.

Overall grade: A: Exceptional.

Both Vogel and Wynne have a lot to be proud of here. The Petrus Prestige Sublime line is one that bears watching into the future as the brand matures by using more aged leaves.

New Camacho Select now shipping
Camacho Cigars is famous for its Camacho Corojo and a series of other blends using tobaccos grown on its Honduran farms at the Rancho Tabacos Jamastran. In 2005, however, Julio Eiroa decided to do something different as a holiday gift to the many tobacconists who had help make Camacho such an important brand.

He had the idea to make a blend that wasn’t all Honduran-grown, but instead used a Cameroon wrapper for a different style of taste and texture. The Camacho Select was born and was such a hit with the tobacconists who tried it that it was very quickly added to the standard Camacho production line.

Three years later and Eiroa decided to update the blend, using a darker Cameroon wrapper with Honduran-grown binder and filler leaves. The result is medium in body, with a nutty and earthy flavor. The brand’s presentation has been upgraded considerably, now double-banded with a footer that reads “Select” and “Julio Eiroa” and packed in elegant, trapezoidal boxes of 21 cigars each.

The Camacho Select remains affordable, however. The same five sizes – Churchill, Lonsdale, Robusto, Super Robusto and Torpedo – are offered, with retail pricing from $5.60 for the Lonsdale up to $7.35 for the Torpedo.

New Costa Rican brand now being imported to the U.S.
Costa Rican-made cigars were a hot item during the Cigar Boom, especially Tony Borhani’s hot Bahia line made in San Jose.

There aren’t that many on the market now, but Miami Cigar & Co. of Miami – distributors of La Aurora, Don Lino, Tatiana and other brands – is bringing Brun del Re to the U.S. after its successful debut in Europe and Asia.

The Brun del Re brand is made in San Rafael de Escaza, Costa Rica under the supervision of Carlo Corazza, whose dream has been to return to his family’s ancient tradition in tobacco.

The result is a three-line brand: Brun del Re Premium, Brun del Re Gold and Brun del Re Colonial. All three are offered in four standard sizes: Corona (6 inches by 44 ring), Robusto (5 x 50), Torpedo (6 x 54) and Churchill (7 x 48).

The first to be introduced will be the Premium, which features Nicaraguan-grown binder and filler leaves and an Ecuadorian-grown, Connecticut-seed wrapper. It’s considered smooth and sweet.

The Colonial is to follow, with a rich Costa Rica-grown maduro wrapper complementing Nicaraguan and Costa Rican filler leaves for a full-bodied taste.

And the winner is:
