NEW, OLD-STYLE CABINETS FROM J-R Print E-mail

“We never closed,” he said during last month’s International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Association convention & trade show in Las Vegas. “We kept making cigars with our four rollers in Miami, but now we can sell them everywhere.”

The Pio VI taste and style has been maintained, today using an Ecuadorian-grown, Sumatra-seed wrapper, Ecuadorian binder and Dominican and Nicaraguan-grown filler leaves. Only five sizes are made, from a 5-inch by 50-ring Robusto (“Overture No. 3") to the 7-inch by 48-ring Churchill (“Overture No. 1") at retail prices of $5.25 to $7.50 before local tobacco and sales taxes.

Medina was actually able to get the brand back into circulation in late 2007 and has been re-building what was once an expanding list of clients for this small-production brand. Even with the ability to sell Pio VI nationally, Medina is sticking to his boutique formula and appointing only a select number of retailers to carry the brand. You can find them only by inquiry at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

If belief in your product is the key to building a business, Medina should be on his way once again, this time without any interference.

New Hampshire landmark shop passes to new owners
Earlier this month, Leonard Seagren and Rus Cullen turned over the much-loved Federal Cigar shop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire to new owners Rick and Meghan Gadway.

The Federal Cigar store was not only a local landmark, but garnered national attention every four years as Seagren held an in-store straw poll on the U.S. Presidential election just prior to the New Hampshire Primaries.

According to Foster’s Daily Democrat, the Gadways opened Top Shelf Cigar in 2006 in nearby Dover and once Seagren and Cullen decided to sell the two Federal stores (there is a second in the area on Route One), the sale was made quickly as Seagren was impressed with the energy and knowledge that the Gadways brought with them. “We carefully selected them in hopes of making it bigger and better than it is today,” said Seagren.

Rick Gadway said the plans are to include a private smoking lounge in the store. Seagren and Cullen owned the store for 27 years, but the original Federal Cigar store opened in 1921. The Gadways will be the fifth owners of the store.

And the winner is . . .
