CUBAN CURING BARNS HIT BY GUSTAV Print E-mail

This size – 7 1/4 inches by 57 ring – appears in the Partagas line for the first time in 2000, when it was included in the 155th Anniversary humidor, but it has not been offered in standard production since then. This “long version” of the Salomones has been made for only two Cuban brands: Cuaba and Partagas.

  • The eighth “book as humidor” series known as the Habanos Collection is getting ready to ship for 2008. As announced, it will feature a new size called the Sublimes Extra of 7 1/4 inches and 54 ring gauge, made in the Cohiba blend.

Each case houses 20 cigars and only 1,000 will be made, meaning that just 20,000 Cohiba Sublimes Extra will be produced. This item is also destined for Casa del Habano shops worldwide, but not to other retailers.

  • A new item which is expected to be widely available is a new “Travel Retail Selection” (pictured above) which includes three of the newer Havana cigars in aluminum tubes: the Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto (4 x 50), Montecristo Petit Edmundo (4 3/8 x 52) and Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill (4 7/8 x 50).

The new “double chamber” humidified tube is being used for all three cigars, which is promoted to “keep the Habanos inside for a long time in safe conditions.” In addition, a cigar which has been kept outside of the tube for a while can be restored in about a week inside these tubes.

No pricing information was provided, but this travel pack is expected to be available in worldwide duty-free outlets by the end of the year.

New anti-smoking regulations may close Boston cigar bars
The Boston Public Health Commission is beginning the process of proposing new anti-smoking regulations which, among other things, targets the closure of cigar bars in the City of Boston.

The Boston Globe reported that the new regulations are aimed primarily at cigarette smoking and will include a ban on the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies and on college campuses and a ban on smoking in hotels and outdoors in patio areas of restaurants and bars. The story by reporter Stephen Smith also noted that “after a five-year grace period, the city would shutter cigar bars, swank salons catering to tobacco connoisseurs, which were exempt from the earlier regulation.”

Following the introduction of the proposed ordinances, public comments in writing and in at least one hearing will be held before they can be voted on.

The report included the resignation of some who will be affected that the passage of the proposals is a fait accompli:
The prohibition against tobacco sales on college campuses would apply to convenience stores such as those operated by 660 Corporation, which rents space from Boston University on its main campus as well as at the South End medical school campus.

Tobacco products account for as much as two-fifths of sales at the average Massachusetts convenience store, according to an industry group.

"Clearly, it's not going to be good for us," said Chris Christensen, the company's director of operations. "But in the end, if this has any political headwind to it, it'll take that course no matter what I think."

Peter Christie, president of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association, said his group will not fight the ban against smoking on patios. "To be very honest, I think it's a done deal," he said.
    To our readers
The news from Cuba and from Boston were too important to hold, so we’ll have our normal end-of-the-week tasting report on Monday instead.
