Los Angeles, October 8 – Once a year, the British auction house Christie’s offers a selection of recent and vintage cigars for sale and the 2008 edition is coming up in London on October 16.

Of the 94 cigar lots in this sale (sale identification no. 7640), which is primarily devoted to vintage wine, there are some obvious stars:

  • A pre-embargo case of 100 Romeo y Julieta cigars from the long-ago-closed humidor at the Saks & Co. store in New York in excellent condition is being offered, with 25 each of a Petit Corona (5 inches by 46 ring), a Corona (5 3/4 x 44) and two perfectos of 6 1/2 inches by 48 ring and 6 1/4 inches by 52 ring. The projected sales price is from $14,000-17,500 or $140-175 per cigar.

  • Three boxes of pre-embargo Hoyo de Monterrey cigars with light claro wrappers from the 1920s or 1930s from the T.B. Carlin shop in London are being offered. All are 5 1/4 inches by 38 ring:

    > A partial box of 38 is expected to bring from $1,750-2,600;

    > Two full boxes of 50 cigars are expected to sell for $2,600 to $3,500 each.

  • A pre-embargo box of 50 Belinda Empires (5 1/2 x 42) is expected to go for $1,750-2,100.

  • A 1992 Cuban Cohiba Aniversario Linea 1492 humidor with 90 cigars, including 15 each of the Siglo I-VI sizes with anniversary bands (no. 56 of 500 made) is expected to sell for $2,800-3,500.

  • There are ten lots of the always-popular, Havana-made Davidoffs on the auction list:

    > A partial box of 24 Dom Perignon (7 x 47) cigars is expected to yield $4,400-5,300.

    > A single Dom Perignon in a cardboard box is expected to sell for $175-210! Wow!

    > There are three lots of Davidoff No. 1s (7 1/2 x 38), with one full box on sale (from 1991) and that’s expected to sell for $1,750-2,100.

    > Three full boxes of Davidoff No. 2s (6 x 38) are on offer, from the 1970s and 1980s, projected to sell for $1,050-1,400 each.

    > One box of the longish Davidoff 3000s (7 x 33) from 1990 will be auctioned and is expected to sell for $875-1,050.

    > A bundle of seven Davidoff 80 Aniversario cigars (9 1/4 x 47), two of which are in wooden tubes, will be on sale. The lot is expected to sell for $1,400 to $1,750 or an astonishing $200 to $250 each!
