Plus: Bradenton Cigar Club Scene Stays HotLos Angeles, December 8 – There’s little doubt that the Fuente Fuente Opus X is one of the most sought-after cigars in today’s market. The limited number of cigars produced, the limited distribution and the quality of construction, balanced taste and packaging make it a cigar to remember. Now, the Fuente and Newman families are using the power of this brand to help their pet project, the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation at holiday time. Mike’s Cigars of Bay Harbour, Florida, which has had a close relationship with the Fuentes for many years, is now offering a special box of 22 Opus X cigars featuring 13 different shapes, in conjunction with Prometheus International: • Each box of 22 (pictured above) includes the entire Opus X line except for the 9-inch “Perfecxion A.” There are two cigars of most sizes, but one each of the Petit Lancero, the no. 4, the no. 5 and the Super Belicoso. • Also included are two “Forbidden X” in the newer 6 1/4-inch by 49-ring size and two “Chili Pepper” cigars, about which little is known so far. • Each cigar is encased in an individual coffin, marked with the name of the cigar and its year of release. • A total of 500 boxes are scheduled for release and each is numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The promotion is essentially for an Opus X sampler with the Forbidden X and Chili Pepper thrown in. The price? A cool $750 per box, or $34.09 a stick. There’s a limit of one per customer. That’s about what Opus X cigars have been bringing at auction on eBay, despite site rules against tobacco sales. If sold out, the boxes would bring in a total of $375,000 from which the net proceeds will be donated to the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. Created in 2001, the Foundation is now building a 23-acre complex near Santiago, Dominican Republic, which will contain a school, medical center, adult training facility and recreational facilities. The school opened in September 2004 and the construction is ongoing. Thus far, more than $1 million has been raised for the construction effort and the sale of these sampler boxes will contribute significantly. All donations to the Foundation go to the charitable work itself as the Fuente and Newman families underwrite the administrative expenses. It’s not the first time that a special Opus X edition has been sold for heavy prices. In 2002, Fuente and Prometheus teamed up to produce a series of anniversary humidors for sale at $10,000 each. Beautifully finished, they contained 100 Opus X cigars, including some one-off shapes not seen again. By comparison, today’s sale is cheap: only $34.09 per cigar rather than the $100 a stick price for the anniversary box. Bradenton Keeps on Clubbin’! Remember our story on the renewed rise of cigar bars and cigar clubs in the Bradenton, Florida area? It keeps getting hotter! Wade Tatangelo, writing for the Bradenton Herald, reviewed the new “Le Cigar” club last week with enthusiasm, based primarily in the reaction of his friend Tim, a down-to-earth type for whom the Frenchified name seemed “a bit too high falutin.” “‘What do you have in the $5 range?’ Tim finally asked after inhaling enough second-hand cigar smoke to what his appetite. “Following a contemplative pause, Le Cigar’s owner/manager Allen Yearick strolled past the big-screen TV and entered the walk-in humidor. Smiling, Yearick returned holding a Hoyo de Monterrey. A great bargain, he said, at $3.50. “The cigar was ignited with what appeared to be a portable blow torch produced from the bar.” Needless to say, Tim enjoyed the Hoyo and smoked happily ever after. Tatangelo noted that there was no food service at Le Cigar, but Fav’s Italian Cucina is located next door. Le Cigar does not serve spirits yet, but as Tatangelo noticed “The upside to this, though, is that one can sit at the bar without some loud-mouth leaning over your shoulder to order a round of Jager-bombs every 10 minutes. “And that’s what makes Le Cigar a solid addition to the burgeoning night life scene in Bradenton.” Good enough. Le Cigar is located at 425 12th Street West in Bradenton; telephone (941) 308-2447. See you there! ~ Rich Perelman
